SAN DIEGO -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team had a tough shooting night Friday on the opening day of Point Loma's Thanksgiving Classic.
The Golden Eagles shot just 27 percent and fell to the host Sea Lions, 73-54, in Golden Gym. Cal State LA (2-5) had a two-game winning streak snapped by Point Loma (5-1), which remained unbeaten against California Collegiate Athletic Association competition this season.
Rikke Fabricius had another double-double for the Golden Eagles with 13 points and 16 rebounds, while
Alyssa Fisher also had 13 points. Chiderak Uzowuru had 10 points.
Roya Rustamzada had 16 points and nine rebounds to lead three Sea Lions in double figures. Alex Brunk had 12 points and Tayla Hepburn had 11 points and nine rebounds.
The Golden Eagles were just 17-of-62 from the floor and made just 3-of-12 from 3-point range. Cal State LA was also just 17-of-26 from the free-throw line.
The Golden Eagles had a 48-44 rebounding edge, but also committed 16 turnovers to only nine for the Sea Lions.
Cal State LA allowed the first eight points of the game and never caught up. Fisher scored the first basket of the game for the Golden Eagles halfway through the first quarter and Cal State LA trailed 17-11 after one period. A basket by
Christine Delapina made it 19-16 in the second quarter, but Point Loma held a 32-23 lead at halftime.
Fisher opened the second half with a 3-pointer for Cal State LA and five straight points by Fisher and a basket by Delapina got the Golden Eagles to within one at 36-35. An offensive rebound and basket by
Kassie Krueger kept the Golden Eagles within 38-37 with five minutes left in the third quarter, but Point Loma closed the period with a 13-4 run to take a 51-41 lead into the final period.
Uzowuru made a layup to make it 51-43 with 9:46 to go, but Point Loma scored the next 10 points and never looked back.
Cal State LA will conclude play in the two-day tournament against California Baptist on Saturday at noon.
