LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team needed a big bounce back effort on Saturday night and the Golden Eagles got one against Cal State East Bay.
The Golden Eagles, one night after a stinging last-second defeat to Cal State Monterey Bay, got a much better effort on Saturday in a 63-52 California Collegiate Athletic Association victory over Cal State East Bay.
Rikke Fabricius had a 17-point, 11-rebound double-double to lead three Golden Eagles in double figures. Cal State LA (1-4, 1-1 CCAA) picked up its first win of the season.
Fabricius had her fourth double-double in five games for the Golden Eagles.
Rebeccah DiRegolo just missed a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds. She hit all six of her field-goal attempts and also blocked three shots in a superb performance.
Christine Delapina had 10 points and three assists.
Cal State East Bay (2-3, 0-2 CCAA) got 12 points from Morgan Greene and 10 points from Janae Chamois.
Cal State LA also got a big performance off the bench on Saturday from newcomer
Chiderah Uzowuru, who had nine points and seven rebounds in 19 outstanding minutes.
Cal State LA shot 42.9 percent (21-of-49) from the floor and made only three of 13 attempts from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were great at the free-throw line, making 18-of-19. Cal State East Bay shot 32.1 percent (18-of-56) and was just 3-of-14 from 3-point range. The Pioneers were 13-of-19 from the free-throw line.
Cal State LA had a 37-32 rebounding edge.
The Golden Eagles allowed the first basket of the game, but never trailed again. The Golden Eagles scored the next eight points on two baskets from Fabricius, Fisher made a layup and DiRegolo made a basket to give the Golden Eagles an 8-2 lead. Cal State LA took its first double-digit lead at 15-5 after a three-point play by Fabricius. The Golden Eagles settled for a 17-9 lead after the first quarter.
Cal State LA took a 24-9 lead after a pair of free throws by
Madison Adams and the Golden Eagles had a 32-20 lead at halftime.
Cal State East Bay cut into the deficit in the third quarter and pulled to within four points, 42-38 before a layup by DiRegolo made it 44-38 entering the fourth quarter.
A jumper by Uzowuru gave the Golden Eagles a 52-40 lead with five minutes to go and the Golden Eagles led by at least eight points the rest of the way.
