CARSON -- Cal State LA's men's basketball team saw its four-game winning streak come to a crashing halt Saturday in the Torodome.
Cal State LA shot just 37.5 percent and were beaten badly on the boards in a disappointing 80-64 loss to Cal State Dominguez Hills in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game. The Golden Eagles (11-11, 6-7 CCAA) held an eight-point lead early in the first half, but Cal State Dominguez Hills (10-8, 6-6 CCAA surged to a 45-40 lead at halftime and never trailed again. The Golden Eagles slipped behind the Toros in the conference race.
Roderick Evans-Taylor had a team-high 15 points and six rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while
Jordan Wilson had 13 points.
Justin Sadler had 23 points and nine rebounds for the Toros, while Dharion Tanner had 17 points, Deondre Otis had 14 points and Khalil Bedart-Ghani had 12 points .
Geoffrey Frid had nine points and four rebounds and
Garrett Carter had eight points for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State LA was just 21-of-56 from the floor and made only 6-of-21 shots from 3-point range. The Golden Eagles were 16-of-23 from the free-throw line. Cal State Dominguez Hills shot 47.4 percent (27-of-57) and made 4-of-15 from 3-point range. The Toros were 22-of-26 from the free-throw line.
Cal State LA was out-rebounded, 42-29, and committed 12 turnovers to 11 for the Toros.
The Golden Eagles broke out to a 10-2 lead four minutes into the game after a pair of free throws by
Devin Means, but it went quickly downhill from there. Cal State Dominguez Hills went on a 28-12 run to open up a 30-22 lead. A Wilson 3-pointer gave the Golden Eagles a 33-32 lead and a jumper by Carter gave the Golden Eagles their last lead at 35-34. The Toros closed the half with a 12-5 run and took a 45-40 halftime lead.
The Golden Eagles got to within one point, 49-48, after a layup by Wilson with 16 minutes to go and trailed by just two points, 53-51, after a three-point play by Frid with 13:25 to go, but the Toros responded with an 8-0 run and never looked back.
Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a road game at Humboldt State.
