Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Golden Eagles Unable To Complete Comeback Bid

TURLOCK -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team once again showed its ability to fight back from seemingly insurmountable deficits, but the Golden Eagles were unable to translate that quality into a victory Saturday night.

The Golden Eagles carved a 16-point, third-quarter deficit down to three points late in the fourth quarter, but ultimately fell to Stanislaus State, 63-55, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest in the Ed and Bertha Fitzpatrick Arena. Cal State LA (9-9, 6-4 CCAA) slipped behind Stanislaus State (9-9, 7-2 CCAA) in the battle for second place in the conference. The Warriors are now just one game behind conference-leading UC San Diego.

Da'Jah Jackson led the Golden Eagles with 20 points and three assists. She was 7-of-10 from the field, 1-of-2 from 3-point range and 5-of-5 from the free-throw line. Samantha Lee had 13 points for the Golden Eagles, while Rikke Fabricius finished with eight points.

C. Sanders-Curry led Stanislaus State with a 20-point, 14-rebound double-double. Reana Hardin had 16 points.

Christine Delapina had seven points, three rebounds and two assists for Cal State LA, while Rachael DiRegolo had a team-high eight rebounds to go along with two points.

Cal State LA never could get untracked offensively and shot just 32.7 percent (17-of-52) for the game and just 5-of-19 from 3-point range. Stanislaus State shot 40 percent (24-of-60) and was 5-of-18 from 3-point range. Cal State LA was 16-of-21 from the free-throw line, while Stanislaus State was 10-of-14.

Cal State LA was out-rebounded, 41-33, and committed 23 turnovers to 21 for the Warriors.

For the second night in a row, Cal State LA found itself battling an uphill battle right from the start. On Saturday, the Golden Eagles surrendered the first five points of the game and never caught up. Fabricius scored on a layup for Cal State LA's first points of the game and a layup by Jackson got the Golden Eagles to within two points at 9-7. Stanislaus State, though, closed the quarter on a 9-4 run and took an 18-11 lead into the second quarter after a late 3-pointer.

Lee hit a pair of 3-pointers to help bring the Golden Eagles closer after Stanislaus State took a 20-11 lead and a 3-pointer by Fabricius got the Golden Eagles to within 25-24. Again, though, Stanislaus State hit a late 3-pointer and took a 36-27 lead at halftime.

Cal State LA faced its largest deficit, 16 points, at 45-29 three minutes into the second half, but battled back to make things interesting in the fourth. A 3-pointer by Jackson made it 49-44 at the end of three quarters.

Cal State LA threatened on several instances in the fourth period, but Stanislaus State answered each challenge. A layup by Mackenzie Barnes made it 54-51 with 2:48 to go, a layup by Jackson made it 56-53 with 2:10 remaining and a pair of free throws by Lee made it 58-55 with 1:13 left. Stanislaus State, though, scored the final five points of the game to secure the win.

Cal State LA will return to action next Friday, Jan. 20, with a home game against Cal State East Bay.
