IRVINE -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team found itself on the wrong end of a tightly-contested match Saturday in Irvine.
The Golden Eagles surrendered a pair of goals in a five-minute span of the second half and fell to Concordia, 2-1, at Eagles Field. Cal State LA (1-1) won at home on Thursday over Saint Martin's by a 2-1 score, but fell by the same count in its first road game of the season.
Cal State LA took a 1-0 lead early in the second half on
Victoria Arredondo's third goal of the season, but the Golden Eagles fell victim to a pair of pivital calls that changed the complexion of the match. The Golden Eagles had an apparent goal wiped away by an offsides call and, just moments later, a foul call deep in Cal State LA territory led to a free kick goal that tied the game for Concordia.
Concordia (1-0-1) then notched the game-winner in the 62nd minute and the Golden Eagles were unable to get the equalizer.
It was an even game throughout. Both teams struggled to generate quality scoring chances and the shots were even at 7-7. Concordia had a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.
Cal State LA goalkeeper
Adriana Maldonado had four saves, while Jazmin Alvarez made three saves for Concordia and another shot was saved off the line by a defender.
Arredondo and
Anahie Duran both had a pair of shots for the Golden Eagles.
After a scoreless first half, Arredondo scored her third goal of the season with assists from
Blanca Adame and Duran. Arredondo has already surpassed her goal total from a year ago.
Natalie Werner converted on a free kick for Concordia in the 56th minute and then assisted on the game-winner in the 62nd minute by Morgan Serres.
Cal State LA had a pair of opportunities down the stretch, but Concordia's defense stood strong.
Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a home game against Simon Fraser at 6 p.m.
