Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Golden Eagles Fall To No. 1 Seed Dominguez Hills

CARSON -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team saw its hopes for an upset win in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament evaporate in a hurry Tuesday night in the Torodome.

The Golden Eagles took a brief lead early in the second quarter, but the Toros rebounded with a flurry and raced away to a 91-66 victory in the Torodome. Cal State LA (10-17) was 6-3 over its final nine regular-season games to get into the tournament, including a thrilling 98-92 overtime win in the Eagles Nest last month that started them on their run. Cal State Dominguez Hills (21-8), which has won the past two tournament titles, made sure there wouldn't be a repeat performance on Tuesday.

Cal State LA ends its season, while Cal State Dominguez Hills advances to the semi-finals on Friday in Stockton.

Rikke Fabricius had 19 points and four rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while Christine Delapina had 10 points, six rebounds and three assists. Franeka Hall had eight points and four rebounds, Kiah Knox had eight points and seven rebounds, while Bree Parsons and Samantha Lee had seven points each.

Breanne Garcia had 26 points to lead four Torors in double figures, while Imari Brown had 19 points and four rebounds. Ali Bettencourt had 16 points and Julia Poecksteiner had 10 points, including nine on three key early 3-pointers that got the Toros off and running.

Cal State Dominguez Hills shot 43.5 percent (27-of-62), while Cal State LA shot just 36.5 percent (19-of-52). The Toros had a big edge from behind the 3-point arc, knocking down 9-of-22 attempts to Cal State LA's 4-of-13. The Toros were 28-of-33 from the free-throw line, while the Golden Eagles were 24-of-28.

Cal State LA was out-rebounded, 40-34, and committed 25 turnovers to 15 for the Toros.

Cal State LA fell behind early, but trailed by just one point after one quarter, 17-16, and then took its only lead of the game, 19-17, after a 3-pointer by Ali Orlich. The Toros, though, scored the next nine points before a 3-pointer by Bree Parsons stopped the run and left the Golden Eagles trailing, 27-22. Cal State Dominguez Hills then closed out the half with another big run, this one a 16-5 spurt, to take a 43-27 halftime lead.

Cal State LA got to within 14 points early in the quarter after a layup by Fabricius, but Cal State Dominguez Hills led by as many as 21 points in the period before taking a 68-51 lead into the final quarter.

The Golden Eagles then surrendered the first six points of the fourth quarter and the Toros pulled away for its final margin of victory.
