LOS ANGELES -- Cal State LA's volleyball team overcame a slow start to force a fifth set, but fell short to Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday night.
The Golden Eagles dropped the first two sets and eventually fell in the fifth set to the Toros, 25-22, 25-18, 19-25, 18-25, 15-12. Cal State LA (15-8, 11-4 CCAA) slipped 1 1/2 games behind first-place Cal State San Bernardino in the South Division with the loss. The Golden Eagles had to settle for a season's split with the Toros (9-14, 6-9 CCAA).
Alma Serna had 18 kills and six blocks, while
JamieAnn Bero had 14 kills and seven blocks.
Lauren Gomez added nine kills and 22 digs.
Morelia Castro and Bridget Heins had 15 kills each for the Toros.
Kelsey Molnar had five kills, 52 set assists and 10 digs.
Cal State LA had a 64-61 edge in kills and outhit the Toros, .235 - .190. The Golden Eagles had a rough night from the serving line, recording only three aces with 10 service errors. The Toros had an 8-7 edge in blocks.
The Golden Eagles fell into an 17-11 hole in the first set, before rallying back to take a 19-17 lead after a kill by Gomez and an attack error. The Golden Eagles led as late as 22-21 after a kill by Serna, but the Toros scored the last four points to close out the set.
The Toros jumped out to an 18-11 lead in the second set and never looked back to take a 2-0 lead.
Cal State LA led for most of the third set and closed it out after kills by
Erie Williams and
Taylor Kushner. Cal State LA jumped out to a 19-12 lead in the fourth set before the Toros closed to within 22-18. A Kushner kill, a block by Molnar and Bero and a Bero kill sent the match to a fifth set.
Cal State LA fell behind 7-4 in the fifth set and never could get even. A kill by Bero made it 11-10, a kill by Molnar made it 12-11 and a block by Serna and Molnar made it 13-12, but the Toros won the final two points to close out the match.
Cal State LA will return to action next Friday with a home match against Stanislaus State.
