Golden Eagles Sweep Past Cal Poly Pomona

POMONA -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team had a nice bounce back after its disappointing five-set loss at Cal State San Bernardino on Friday.

The Golden Eagles got off to a strong start and never looked back and swept Cal Poly Pomona, 25-17, 25-23, 25-20, Saturday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match in Kellogg Gym. Cal State LA (14-7, 10-3 CCAA) kept its hold on second place in the CCAA South Division, while Cal Poly Pomona (6-14, 1-10 CCAA) was unable to string together back-to-back wins. The Broncos had beaten Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday night in five sets.

Alma Serna led a balanced Cal State LA offensive attack with 12 kills, four blocks and a hitting percentage of .370. Sifa Faaiu added eight kills, while JamieAnn Bero had seven kills and two blocks and hit at a .357 clip. Taylor Kushner and Lauren Gomez had six kills each.

Andrea Bosnic had 16 kills and 12 digs for Cal Poly Pomona.

Kelsey Molnar had 35 set assists, two aces and seven digs, while Chloe Clancy had a match-high 10 digs.

Cal State LA had a 42-40 advantage in kills and hit at a .235 percentage to .134 for the Broncos. Cal Poly Pomona had an 8.5 - 6 advantage in blocks, while Cal State LA had a 3-0 edge in service aces.

The Golden Eagles started quickly and opened up an 18-12 advantage in the first set after a block by Molnar and Bero. The Broncos got to within 19-16, but a kill by Faaiu and an ace by Bero helped Cal State LA take a 23-16 lead. A kill by Serna ultimately finished the set.

The Golden Eagles trailed as late as 19-17 in the second set before a kill by Faaiu, a kill by Gomez, a block by Faaiu and Serna, an attack error and a kill by Serna gave the Golden Eagles a 22-19 lead. Cal State LA got to set point on a kill by Serna and ended the set with a Cal Poly Pomona attack error.

The Golden Eagles broke the third set open with a 6-0 run that extended a 14-10 edge to a 20-10 advantage. A kill by Serna, an attack error, a block by Kushner and Bero, kills by Kushner and Gomez and another attack error accounted for the run. A kill by Faaiu made it 23-13 and, after Cal Poly Pomona scored six straight points to make it 23-19, kills by Serna and Clancy ended the match.

Cal State LA will return to action next Friday with a road match at Humboldt State.
