LOS ANGELES – Cal State LA's women's soccer team returned home, but was unable to shake its recent slump.
The Golden Eagles dropped their fourth straight game in a 2-0 loss to Cal Poly Pomona on Friday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game. Cal State LA (6-6-2, 5-4 CCAA) slipped into sixth place in the conference with 15 points, while Cal Poly Pomona (6-5-2, 5-3-1 CCAA) jumped into fifth with 16 points.
Cal Poly Pomona had a 10-8 edge in shots and a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks. Ricki Ives did not make a save for the Broncos while recording the shutout.
Adriana Maldonado had three saves for the Golden Eagles.
Anahie Duran had three shots to lead the Golden Eagles and probably had the Golden Eagles' best chance without getting off a shot. She eluded a Cal Poly Pomona defender in the box midway through the second half and had Ives out of position, but slipped before being able to get off a shot and the ball was ultimately cleared.
Veronika Steen and
Tatiana Zuvic had two shots each for the Golden Eagles.
The game was scoreless until the final minute of the first half with neither team able to do much offensively until Cal Poly Pomona converted on a corner kick to take the lead. Daisy Duran delivered the corner kick and Natalie Di Angelo was able to direct a header inside the far post with 15 seconds remaining in the half.
The Broncos took a 2-0 lead early in the second half when Sydney Yates accepted a perfectly-placed cross from Tori Tappero and finished from right in front of the goal in the 54
th minute.
Cal State LA will return to action on Sunday with its final home game of the season against Cal State San Bernardino at 11:30 p.m. The Golden Eagles will honor their three seniors –
Jennifer Torres,
Danielle Telles and
Veronika Steen – in pregame ceremonies.
