Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Golden Eagles Unable To Post First Road Win

SAN MARCOS -- Cal State LA's women's soccer team continues to be snake-bit on the road.

The Golden Eagles dropped their third straight game, falling to Cal State San Marcos, 2-1, in overtime on a penalty kick goal Sunday at The Cage. Cal State LA (6-5-2, 5-3 CCAA) started conference play with five straight shutout wins at home, but remains winless on the road. Cal State LA lost in overtime for the second time in the past three games.

The Golden Eagles remain in fourth place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association with 15 points and are one point back of third-place Cal State San Bernardino with four conference games left. The top six teams will qualify for the CCAA Championship Tournament.

The game on Sunday was scoreless at halftime with Cal State San Marcos (6-3-4, 4-3-1 CCAA) holding a 5-1 edge in shots. The Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the 52nd minute on Kayla Anderson's second goal of the season. She was able to volley a cross inside the post for the first goal of the game. Courtney McLeish and Morgan Simmons had the assists.

The score remained at 1-0 until the 84th minute when Anahie Duran tied it with her team-leading fifth goal of the season. Adyson Willett set up the goal by flicking the ball to Duran, who chipped it over the goalkeeper and into the goal from 30 yards out.

The Golden Eagles had the momentum over the final few minutes of the second half. Mary Lou Larose had a good chance in the final minute saved and a corner kick by Micaela Estrada in the waning seconds did not result in a final attempt.

Cal State San Marcos had the only two shots of overtime, including the game-winner. A corner kick into the box was inadvertently touched by an arm in a crowd of players and the Cougars were given a penalty kick. Yeya Millen knocked it in for her third goal of the season.

Cal State San Marcos had an 11-5 edge in shots and a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks. Adriana Maldonado made four saves for the Golden Eagles, while Erica Dory made one save for Cal State San Marcos. Duran and Larose had two shots each for the Golden Eagles, while Willett added one.

Cal State LA will return to action on Friday with a home game against Cal Poly Pomona at 4:30 p.m. A special pregame tailgate will begin at 3:30 p.m. and include food and prize giveaways. In addition, Cal State LA scarves will be given away inside the stadium.
