Golden Eagles Knock Off Toros In Four Sets

CARSON -- Cal State LA's women's volleyball team came up big in the final two sets of an important California Collegiate Athletic Association victory.

The Golden Eagles, after splitting the first two sets with Cal State Dominguez Hills, put everything together in the final two and beat the Toros, 25-19, 22-25, 25-13, 25-20 on Friday in the Torodome. Cal State LA (12-6, 8-2 CCAA) maintains its lead in the CCAA South Division while winning for the eighth time in its last 10 games. The Golden Eagles completed a 2-0 week with wins over UC San Diego and Cal State Dominguez Hills (7-11, 4-6 CCAA)..

Alma Serna had 16 kills, three blocks and one ace while hitting at a .400 percentage for the Golden Eagles, while JamieAnn Bero had 12 kills and a .391 hitting percentage. She also had two aces and two blocks. Taylor Kushner had eight kills and 18 digs, while Sifa Faaiu had seven kills.

Claire Autry and Morelia Castro had 12 kills each to lead Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Kelsey Molnar had 44 set assists, 13 digs, two kills and two aces. Lauren Gomez had five kills and 18 digs, Daisy Portillo had four kills in only 11 swings and a pair of solo blocks.

Cal State LA had a 53-45 advantage in kills and hit at a .239 percentage to a .143 percentage for the Toros. Cal State LA had an 8-7 edge in blocks and had eight service aces with just four errors. Bero, Molnar and Kushner had two aces each.

Cal State LA started quickly and took a 16-8 lead after a bad set and a kill by Kushner. The Golden Eagles maintained a 23-15 advantage and got to set point after a Serna ace. A kill by Bero ended the frame.

Cal State LA held a 19-18 lead in the second set, but Cal State Dominguez Hills scored three straight points to take the lead for good. Kushner had a kill to save on set point at 24-22, but the Toros got the next point to close out the set.

The Golden Eagles took control of the match after the intermission. Cal State LA held a 12-9 lead before a service error and kills by Portillo and Serna made it 15-9. The Golden Eagles held a 19-13 lead and then closed out the set with six straight points. Bero and Kushner had kills to start the run, Bero delivered a service ace and, after a Toro error, Serna had a solo block and a kill to finish the set.

Cal State LA scored three straight points to break an 8-8 tie in the fourth set and never looked back. Back-to-back solo blocks by Portillo and Serna gave the Golden Eagles a 20-15 lead. Autry had two straight service aces to help the Toros pull to within 20-18, but a kill by Portillo stopped the run. A kill by Bero ultimately ended the match.

Cal State LA will return home for a match against Cal State San Marcos on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
