LACEY, WA – Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team completed its season-opening trip to Washington with a shutout victory.
The Golden Eagles, ranked No. 6 in the nation by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, got goals from four different players and posted a 4-0 win over Saint Martin's Saturday at the SMU Soccer Field. Cal State L.A. (1-0-1) had opened its season with a 1-1 tie at Western Washington on Thursday.
Herbert Biste,
Daniel Muro,
Tobias Tobrant and
Shahin Hemat scored goals for the Golden Eagles, who scored twice in each half. Cal State L.A. had a 22-8 advantage in shots and an 8-0 edge in corner kicks.
Steven Barrera and
Anthony Perez split time in goal and each Cal State L.A. goalkeeper made one save.
Biste opened the scoring with a penalty kick in the 22
nd minute, giving the Golden Eagles their first penalty kick attempt since the 2013 season. The goal was Biste's first of the season.
Muro made it 2-0 in the 42
nd minute with assists from
Tobias Tobrant and
Kaan Gultoprak off a free kick sent into the middle, where Muro was able to head it in.
Tobrant made it 3-0 in the 77
th minute when he took a pass from
Marvin Iskra and headed it into the goal. Hemat closed the scoring in the 84
th minute when he followed up his first shot attempt and notched his first goal of the season.
Troy Dumlao was a force for a second straight game and took a match-high seven shots, while Hemat and Muro had three shots each. Kyle Witzel had four shots for Saint Martin's (0-1-1), including both of the Saints' shots on goal.
The Golden Eagles have a 40-15 advantage in shots in their first two games.
Cal State L.A. will return to Southern California and play its next game at Point Loma on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
