SAN DIEGO -- Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team picked up a big NCAA Division II West Region victory on Thursday thanks to another solid team effort.
Herbert Biste got the game-winning goal in the 71st minute and
Anthony Perez stopped a first-half penalty kick to lift the Golden Eagles to a 2-1 victory over Point Loma at the Point Loma Soccer Field. Cal State L.A. (2-0-1) remained unbeaten after three road games against tough competition.
Marvin Iskra also scored for the defending NCAA Division II West Region champs, who scored twice in the second half after a scoreless tie at halftime.
The game was dominated by defense in the first half with each team recording only three shots. Point Loma had an 8-4 advantage in the second half, although the Golden Eagles scored on two of their four attempts.
Perez was outstanding when called upon, most notably in the first half when he stopped a penalty kick attempt by Point Loma's Nico Tagalao. Point Loma goalkeeper Michael Lambert made one save.
Iskra opened the scoring early in the second half when he pounced on a ball that slipped through Lambert's hands and picked up his first goal of the season.
Point Loma evened the score at 1-1 in the 65th minute when Patrice Glaser scored on a back-heel kick after assists from Tyler Allen and Andrew Ritchie.
Biste, though, got the game-winner in the 71st minute with an assist from Iskra. Biste's shot came from the top of the box.
Cal State L.A.'s defense took it from there, although Point Loma was able to take three corner kicks down the stretch. None of the three resulted in a shot, though.
Iskra was a constant threat for the Golden Eagles and had a team-high four shots.
Steven Eberle had two shots. Perez had five saves.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday when the Golden Eagles open California Collegiate Athletic Association play at home against Sonoma State at 7 p.m.
