SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team got a quick score and another strong defensive performance to remain unbeaten after three matches in California Collegiate Athletic Association play.
Marvin Iskra scored in the opening minute of play and the Golden Eagles blanked Cal State San Bernardino, 1-0, Friday night under the lights at Coyote Premier Field. Cal State L.A. (5-0-1, 3-0 CCAA), ranked No. 25 in the nation, won its fifth straight game and recorded its third straight shutout and fourth in the past five games. Cal State San Bernardino (3-3-1, 1-1-1 CCAA) lost for the first time in three conference contests.
Cal State San Bernardino brought in portable lights for the game and a crowd of 762 saw another outstanding defensive showing by the Golden Eagles, who led the nation in goals against average last season. Cal State L.A. had a 13-8 advantage in shots and goalkeeper
Anthony Perez made two saves. Cal State L.A. also had a 3-0 edge in corner kicks.
Perez made his best save in the 77th minute when he made a brilliant one-handed save to deny Cal State San Bernardino's Andy Reyes.
The only scoring in the game came early. Cal State L.A. earned a quick corner kick and converted it into a score.
Herbert Biste sent in a perfectly-placed corner kick and Iskra headed it into the goal for his second goal of the season.
Cal State L.A. continued its pressure early in the game and also took a 2-0 lead when
Troy Dumlao had a strong bid cleared away by Cal State San Bernardino defender Daniel Looker in the 24th minute.
Cal State San Bernardino goalkeeper Mike Warn made a pair of saves in the 75th minute to stop shots by Iskra and Dumlao. Warn also made a good save on a bid by
Brett Elliott, who took a pass from Iskra and sent a shot toward the right post.
Cal State San Bernardino had a pair of attempts in the waning moments, but a shot by Looker went wide in the 89th minute and a shot by Reyes was blocked in the final minute of play.
Iskra had four shots, Dumlao had three shots and
Brandon Herrerias had two shots for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Sunday with a road game at Cal Poly Pomona beginning at 2 p.m.
