Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Golden Eagles Suffer First CCAA Loss On Sunday

POMONA -- Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team did just about everything but score a goal on Sunday and it resulted in the Golden Eagles' first loss of the 2015 season.

The Golden Eagles had big edges in shots and corner kicks - and also earned a penalty kick - but dropped a disappointing 1-0 decision to Cal Poly Pomona in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match at Kellogg Field. No. 25 Cal State L.A. (5-1-1, 3-1) allowed only its third goal of the season, but it was enough to hand the Golden Eagles the loss.

Cal State L.A. had a 13-5 edge in shots and a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Cal Poly Pomona (4-1-3, 1-1-2 CCAA) got the game's only goal in the 57th minute when Patricio Yrizar scored with an assist from Eshel Chardon.

The goal came about 10 minutes after Cal Poly Pomona goalkeeper Jason Trejos saved a penalty kick by Cal State L.A.'s Eduardo Almaraz early in the second half.

That was one of five saves by Trejo, while Cal State L.A. goalkeeper Anthony Perez made one save.

The game was a spirted one between the reigning NCAA Division II West Region champions (Cal State L.A.) and the defending CCAA Championship Tournament titleist (Cal Poly Pomona). There were a total of seven yellow cards issued - four on the Golden Eagles and three on the Broncos.

After falling behind, Cal State L.A. turned up its pressure and Cal Poly Pomona picked up all three of its yellow cards after taking the 1-0 lead.

Lucas Rio Torto, Almaraz and Shahin Hemat had two shots each for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday with a home game against Cal State San Marcos at 4:30 p.m.
