LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team made sure it ended its first weekend of California Collegiate Athletic Association play with a winning effort.
The Golden Eagles got a pair of goals from
Joshua Cortez – one in each half – and Cal State L.A. blanked Humboldt State, 2-0, Sunday at Jesse Owens Track. Cal State L.A. (4-0-1, 2-0 CCAA) recorded its second straight shutout after also blanking Sonoma State, 2-0, on Friday.
Cal State L.A. had several outstanding chances in the second half to stretch the lead and finished the game with a 19-5 advantage in shots. The Golden Eagles had a 9-2 edge in the first half and a 10-3 edge in the second half.
Cal State L.A. also had a 10-5 advantage in corner kicks.
Steven Barrera made three saves in the game, including a sensational diving stop of a shot by Humboldt State's Jonathan Velela in the first half.
Humboldt State's Christopher Germs made five saves, including a tremendous stop of a bid by Cal State L.A.'s
Troy Dumlao. Dumlao received a brilliant pass from
Marvin Iskra and hit a shot that a sliding Germs was able to deflect and keep out of the goal.
The Golden Eagles scored their first goal with one minute left in the opening half. Cortez got a nice pass inside the box from
Shahin Hemat and blasted a shot past Germs for his first goal of the season.
Cortez then cleaned up a nifty scoring play in the 54
th minute to finish the scoring.
Jose Bucio started the play by stealing the ball in Humboldt State territory and getting the ball to
Tobias Tobrant. He then passed to Iskra, who got the ball past Germs and sent a shot rolling toward the goal that Cortez tapped in for his second goal of the game.
The Golden Eagles had several more chances in the second half to extend their lead. Dumlao finished with a game-high seven shots, while
Lucas Rio Torto,
Herbert Biste,
Brandon Herrerias and Cortez had two shots each.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday with a conference match at Cal State San Bernardino beginning at 7 p.m.
