LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team completed a disappointing weekend with another hard-fought loss to a California Collegiate Athletic Association contender.
The Golden Eagles shot 50 percent from the floor, but couldn't slow down Cal State San Bernardino and fell to the Coyotes, 75-67, Saturday night in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (9-11, 8-8 CCAA) lost its third straight game and slipped into seventh place in the conference. The top six teams will qualify for the CCAA Championship Tournament.
Cal State San Bernardino (15-5, 11-5 CCAA) completed a season sweep over the Golden Eagles and strengthened its hold on fourth place in the conference.
Chiara DiMarco had 18 points to lead the Golden Eagles, while
Aiwekhoe Okungbowa had 11 points and six rebounds.
Kaija Powell had nine points, five rebounds and three assists.
Alexcia Mack had a game-high 22 points to lead three Cal State San Bernardino players in double figures. Adriana Brodie had 18 points and 11 rebounds and Brianna Harden had 12 points and six rebounds.
Cal State L.A. made half of its 50 field-goal attempts and knocked down 8-of-19 attempts from 3-point range. The Coyotes shot 48.1 percent (26-of-54) and were 7-of-16 from 3-point range. Cal State San Bernardino was 16-of-25 from the free-throw line, including 12-of-16 in the second half. Cal State L.A. was 9-of-11.
Both teams had 31 rebounds. The Golden Eagles hurt themselves with 20 turnovers, while the Coyotes had just 13.
The Golden Eagles started well and took a 13-12 lead after a 3-pointer by DiMarco. Cal State San Bernardino, though, went on a 10-2 run to open up a 22-15 advantage and led by as many as 10 points in the first half before settling for a 40-32 halftime lead.
Cal State L.A. trailed by 10 points with 13 minutes to play, but went on a 10-2 run to close to within 55-53 after a 3-pointer by
Shanice Jackson with eight minutes to play. Cal State San Bernardino, though, went on a 10-2 run to take a 65-55 lead with 3:48 to go and kept the Golden Eagles at bay the rest of the way.
Cal State L.A. will return to action next Friday with an important home game against Cal State East Bay in the Eagles Nest.
