LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s men's basketball team got some good offense to go with another quality defensive performance on Friday.
The Golden Eagles shot 49 percent from the floor and held San Francisco State to just 34.1 percent and went on to a 65-49 California Collegiate Athletic Association victory in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (10-15, 8-13 CCAA) pulled into a three-way tie for eighth in the conference with the win. San Francisco State (10-15, 8-13 CCAA) is one of those teams tied with the Golden Eagles.
Joshua Munzon had game-high 17 points and
David Hall had 16 points and five rebounds.
Joel Brokenbrough had eight points.
Nick Calcaterra had a team-high 10 points for the Gators, while Andre Jones and Jon McMurry had seven points each.
The Golden Eagles shot 49 percent for the game (24-of-49) and were even better from long range. Cal State L.A. knocked down 8-of-11 attempts from 3-point range and were also 9-of-11 from the free-throw line. Munzon was 5-for-6 from 3-point range and was 6-of-8 overall from the floor.
San Francisco State made just 34.1 percent (15-of-44) and was just 5-of-18 from 3-point range. The Gators were 14-of-16 from the free-throw line.
Cal State L.A. scored the first seven points of the game and never trailed. Munzon hit a 3-pointer to open the game,
Andre McPhail scored on a dunk and
Aaron Alston hit a basket to give the Golden Eagles a quick 7-0 lead.
The Golden Eagles opened up a 14-3 lead after a layup by Brokenbrough, only to see the Gators go on an 8-0 run to close to within 14-11. Cal State L.A. opened up a 30-16 lead after two free throws by Brokenbrough, a tip-in by Alston, a 3-pointer by Hall and a layup by Brokenbrough fueled a 9-0 run. Cal State L.A. settled for a 30-22 halftime lead.
The Golden Eagles then broke the game open in the early stages of the second half. Cal State L.A. exploded with a 24-5 run that gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead of the game, 54-27, with nine minutes to go. The Golden Eagles led by at least 20 points until the final minute of the game.
Cal State L.A. will conclude its season on Saturday with a home game against Sonoma State on Senior Night. The Golden Eagles will honor their three seniors –
