POMONA -- Cal State L.A.'s men's basketball team saw its hopes for a rare sweep over Cal Poly Pomona dashed in a hurry Friday night.
The Golden Eagles fell into a 22-2 hole early in the game and never recovered in a 70-50 loss to the Broncos in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest in Kellogg Gym. Cal State L.A. (9-14, 7-12 CCAA), which beat the Broncos 58-56, in the Eagles Nest on Jan. 17, was seeking its first regular-season sweep over the Broncos since the 1996-97 season.
Xavier Jones had 11 points and seven rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while
Chris Martin had nine points and
Joshua Munzon and
Aaron Alston had seven points each.
Ryan Hall had a game-high 16 points for Cal Poly Pomona (19-5, 15-4 CCAA), while Jordan Faison had 14 points.
Cal State L.A. shot just 35.3 percent (18-of-51) for the game, while Cal Poly Pomona shot 42.3 percent (22-of-52). The Golden Eagles were just 4-of-16 from 3-point range and the Broncos were just 7-of-19. The Golden Eagles were a dismal 10-of-26 from the free-throw line and prevented themselves from making any headway after Cal Poly Pomona's early lead. The Broncos were 19-of-28 from the line.
The Golden Eagles were out-rebounded, 41-37, and committed just 10 turnovers to nine for the Broncos.
Cal State L.A. got off to a dreadful start, allowing the first 16 points of the game before Alston scored with 14:35 left in the half. The Broncos built a 22-2 lead before Martin knocked down a 3-pointer and later hit a free throw to make it 22-6.
A tip-in by Alston and a layup by Martin pulled the Golden Eagles to within 34-23, but the Broncos scored the final five points of the half to make it 39-23 at halftime.
A 3-pointer by Martin and a basket by Jones got the Golden Eagles to within 39-28 with 18 minutes to go and a free throw by Munzon kept the margin at 40-29 with 15 minutes to go. A layup by
Andre McPhail made it 42-31 with 14 minutes to play, but the Golden Eagles couldn't get any closer.
Cal State L.A. will play its final road game of the season on Saturday at UC San Diego.
