LOS ANGELES – Cal State LA's women's basketball team was in a foul mood during its California Collegiate Athletic Association game with Cal State San Bernardino on Friday.
The Golden Eagles had four players foul out in a 74-64 loss to the Coyotes in the Eagles Nest. Cal State LA (3-6, 1-2 CCAA) also struggled from distance in its second straight loss this week.
Cal State LA shot 47.2 percent for the game (25-of-53), but made only 3-of-15 from 3-point range. Cal State San Bernardino shot 46.9 percent (23-of-49) and was just 4-of-13. The Coyotes, though, feasted at the free-throw line, where they made 24-of-33. Cal State LA was 11-of-15.
The Coyotes shot 50 percent in the second half and made 17-of-25 free throws, while the Golden Eagles shot 42.9 percent in the second half and was 9-of-11 from the line.
The Golden Eagles had a 32-31 rebounding edge, but also committed 19 turnovers to 14 for the Coyotes.
Rikke Fabricius had 13 points and seven rebounds before fouling out, while
Bree Parsons had 13 points and four rebounds.
Chiara DiMarco had 10 points, two rebounds and two assists before fouling out on a debatable offensive foul with 6:14 to go.
Alexcia Mack had a big game for the Coyotes, pouring in 25 points. Chelsea Barnes had 15 points and six rebounds, while Adriana Brodie had 10 points and four rebounds.
The Golden Eagles started well and opened up a four-point lead late in the first quarter after a layup by
Kiah Knox. Chelsea Austin, though, hit a 3-pointer for the Coyotes to make it 16-15 after one quarter.
A jumper by Knox made it 18-15 early in the second period, but Cal State San Bernardino led by as many as four points later in the quarter. A layup by
Geena Greene gave the Golden Eagles a 29-28 lead, but a late turnover and basket for Mack gave the Coyotes a 30-29 halftime lead.
A pair of free throws by Parsons gave the Golden Eagles a 36-34 lead early in the third quarter and a basket by DiMarco gave Cal State LA its last lead at 38-37. Cal State San Bernardino surged to an eight-point lead on two occasions before 3-pointers by Parsons and
Samantha Lee brought the Golden Eagles to closer. A basket by
Franeka Hall made it 52-51 before Barnes scored to make it 54-51.
Cal State LA managed only four points in the first six minutes of the fourth quarter and Cal State San Bernardino was able to pull away for a double-digit margin of victory.
Cal State LA will return to action with a road game at Chico State on Dec. 31 at 1 p.m.
