RIVERSIDE -- Cal State LA's women's basketball team got off to a promising start Friday in the California Baptist Thanksgiving Tournament, but things got away from the Golden Eagles after the opening quarter.
The Golden Eagles jumped out to a quick lead against Cal Baptist, but the undefeated Lancers used a pair of 14-0 runs and another of 19-0 to post a 97-64 victory in Van Dyne Gym. Cal State LA led 8-2 and trailed by only three points, 24-21, after one quarter, but was 28-16 in the second quarter and 29-10 in the third.
Bree Parsons had a team-high 13 points and six rebounds for Cal State LA (1-3), while
Franeka Hall had 11 points, 10 rebounds and five steals.
Chiara DiMarco added 10 points and
Samantha Lee had eight points.
Cal Baptist (5-0) had four players score in double figures, led by Cassidy Mihalko, who had 19. Emma Meriggioli had 18 points and Kamille Diaz had 14 points and 12 assists. Darsha Burnside also had 14 points.
Cal State LA, after a hot start, finished 24-of-72 (33.3 percent) from the floor, while Cal Baptist was 34-of-77 (44.2 percent). The Golden Eagles were 7-of-18 from 3-point range (38.9 percent) and the Lancers were 13-of-29 (44.8 percent). Cal State LA was 9-of-18 from the free-throw line and Cal Baptist was 16-of-23.
Cal State LA was also on the short end of a 57-42 rebounding count and committed 16 turnovers to 17 for the Lancers.
The Golden Eagles scored the first five points of the game and led 8-2 and 10-6 before the Lancers took over.
Rikke Fabricius hit a 3-pointer and Hall made a steal and layup to give Cal State LA a quick 5-0 lead. A 3-pointer by Parsons gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead, 8-2, and a basket by DiMarco made it 10-6 three minutes into the game. Cal Baptist, though, used its first 14-0 run to grab a 20-10 lead and the Lancers never trailed again.
Cal State LA did fight back to make it 24-21 by the end of the opening period. Two free throws by Fabricius and a 3-pointer by Hall fueled the Golden Eagles' end-of-the-quarter surge.
A 3-pointer by Lee kept the Golden Eagles within 38-32 midway through the second period, but Cal Baptist used its second 14-0 run to open up a 52-32 lead.
Kaija Powell put an end to the run with a pair of free throws and then hit a 3-pointer to make it 52-37 at halftime.
A 3-pointer by Parsons to open the third quarter made it 52-40, but Cal Baptist then went on a 19-0 run to put the game away. The Lancers led 81-47 after three quarters.
Cal State LA will conclude tournament action on Saturday against Point Loma at noon in Riverside.
