Golden Eagles Win A Wild One At CS Monterey Bay

SEASIDE -- Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team survived a wild battle with Cal State Monterey Bay in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game on Sunday that included three red cards, ta game-tying goal in the waning seconds of regulation, missed penalty kick and a game-winning goal in the second overtme that followed a blocked shot.

The Golden Eagles came out on the right side of a 2-1 decision over the Otters when Shahin Hemat was the first to get a blocked shot by Brett Elliott in the 107th minute and knocked in his second goal of the season. Cal State L.A. (9-2-2, 6-2-1 CCAA) completed a six-point weekend with road wins over San Francisco State and Cal State Monterey Bay and moved into second place in the CCAA. The Golden Eagles have 19 points with three conference games remaining. The top six teams qualify for the CCAA Championship Tournament and the top two will received first-round byes.

Cal State L.A. won despite allowing a goal with just three seconds left in regulation and despite a missed penalty kick late in the first overtime.By the second overtime period, Cal State Monterey Bay (7-6, 4-5 CCAA) was playing two men short and Cal State L.A. effectively kept the pressure on until finally getting the game-winner in the second extra session.

Cal State L.A. had a 18-12 advantage in shots and an 8-3 edge in corner kicks. Those advantage were 7-3 in shots in the overtime periods and 4-1 in corner kicks.

Anthony Perez made four saves in goal for the Golden Eagles, while Evan Drake made seven saves for the Otters.

The game at first didn't look like it would feature such a wild ending. The game was scoreless until the 70th minute when Kaan Gultoprak scored with a beautiful strike on a free kick just outside the bos.

The Otters had their first player ejected in the 88th minute after he received his second yellow card, but Cal State Monterey Bay was still able to equalize in the 90th minute. Matthew Kemp scored the goal off a cross from William Blackburn to send the game into overtime.

Cal State Monterey Bay got its second player sent off in the 99th minute after a second yellow and this one led to a penalty kick. Herbert Biste's bid, though, sailed high and the game continued.

Cal State L.A. finally earned the win in the second overtime. Elliot started the winning sequence with a shot that was blocked by the Otters. Hemat was able to settle the loose ball and ultimately end the game with his deciding shot. Cal State Monterey Bay picked up its third red card after the goal.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday with a road game at Cal State Dominguez Hills at 4:30 p.m.
