CARSON -- Cal State LA's men's soccer team took its shots, particularly in a superb second half, at No. 6 Cal State Dominguez Hills Friday night, but fell short in a key California Collegiate Athletic Association game.
The Golden Eagles surrendered a goal in the seventh minute and the Toros made it stand up in a 1-0 victory at Stub Hub Center Field #3. Cal State L.A. (9-3-2, 6-3-1 CCAA) gave up a first-half goal for the first time this season and the Golden Eagles have still allowed only seven goals all season.
Cal State LA had a 16-13 advantage in shots, incliuding a 12-2 edge in the second half. The Golden Eagles also had a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks in the second half and had two shots cleared away by Cal State Dominguez Hiills defenders.
The Golden Eagles slipped into a three-way tie for third place in the CCAA with Cal State Stanislaus and UC San Diego. Cal State LA has two conference games remaining, Stanislaus State has three and UC San Diego has finished its conference schedule.
Cal State Dominguez Hills (13-1-2, 8-0-2 CCAA) increased its lead in the conference to six points over second-place Cal Poly Pomona, which has 20 points and is one point ahead of the Golden Eagles, Warriors and Tritons.
The top six teams will qualify for the CCAA Championship Tournament and the top two will receive first-round byes.
The Toros struck first on Friday when Jaime Rios scored his second goal of the season with an assist from Gilberto Rocha just 6:10 into the contest.
The Golden Eagles' first big chance came in the 12th minute when
Kaan Gultoprak hit a solid free kick, but Cal State Dominguez Hills goalkeeper Chase Gentry made a diving save.

Anthony Perez countered with a strong save on a one-touch shot by Pedro Velasquez to keep the score close at halftime.
Cal State LA then began to generate some sustained pressure in the second half, but the Toros were able to keep their shutout in tact.
Shahin Hemat, who had an outstanding second half, had a shot in the box deflected and then saved by Gentry in the 51st minute. In the 59th minute,
Steven Eberle a good bid off a pass from
Miguel Galvan Lara saved by Gentry.
Hemat had a shot denied at the goal line by Cal State Dominguez Hills defender Tony Alfaro in the 62nd minute and
Joshua Cortez had a shot in the 82nd minute that Cal State Dominguez Hills defender Brian Chavez kept out of the goal. The Golden Eagles' final bid came following a corner kick by Galvan Lara in the 83rd minute.
Gentry had five saves for the Toros and Cal State Dominguez Hills was credited with a pair of team saves as well. Perez had six saves for the Golden Eagles.
Hemat had a match-high four shots in the match, including three on goal. Gultoprak had three shots.
Cal State LA will return to action on Thursday with a road game at Stanislaus State at 7 p.m.
