LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team got a late goal in regulation and ultimately settled for a 1-1 tie with Chico State Sunday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game at Jesse Owens Track.
Joshua Cortez got his fourth goal of the season in the 87
th minute to allow the Golden Eagles to erase a 1-0 deficit. Although Cal State L.A. had some good possession time in the second half, they just weren't able to connect until Cortez and
Steven Eberle worked some late-game heroics.
Cal State L.A. (7-2-2, 4-2-1 CCAA) sits in fourth place in the CCAA with 13 points, while Chico State (4-5-2, 2-3-1 CCAA) is in a tie for eighth with seven points.
The top six teams will qualify for the CCAA Championship Tournament.
The Golden Eagles were able to earn a point on their final home game of the season. Cal State L.A. honored its nine seniors – Cortez,
Eduardo Almaraz,
Anthony Perez,
Lucas Rio Torto,
Daniel Guzman,
Jose Bucio,
Herbert Biste,
Brett Elliott and
Tobias Tobrant – in pregame ceremonies.
The Senior Day featured a big-time finish.
With time winding down in regulation, Eberle sent a beautiful cross in the box and Cortez raced in to head it into an open net to give the Golden Eagles the equalizer.
Cal State L.A. had an excellent chance to win it in the first overtime, but Chico State goalkeeper Andrew Matthews made a diving deflection of a hard, curving shot by Almaraz. Cal State L.A. received a corner kick, but could not convert.
Chico State had taken a 1-0 lead in the 50
th minute when Octavio Murillo notched his second goal of the season. Omar Nuno did some heavy lifting on the goal, working his way around a defender and sending in a cross that Murillo was able to knock into the net from close range.
Cal State L.A. was able to sustain some good pressure after falling behind, but nothing seemed to click until Cortez' late goal.
Cal State L.A. will play its final five conference games on the road, beginning with a game at San Francisco State on Friday at 12:30 p.m.
