Golden Eagles Get A Big CCAA Win Over Warriors

TURLOCK -- Cal State L.A.'s men's basketball team made sure it finished the job Saturday night in an impressive California Collegiate Athletic Association road win over Cal State Stanislaus.

The Golden Eagles, who came up just short against Chico State on Friday, used a game-breaking 8-0 run late in the second half of a 64-58 victory over the Warriors Saturday night in Fitzpatrick Arena. Cal State L.A. (8-10, 6-8 CCAA) snapped a three-game losing streak with a victory that knocked Cal State Stanislaus (13-6, 10-4 CCAA) out of a share of the CCAA lead. Cal State L.A. had sliced a 17-point deficit to just one point late in the game against Chico State on Friday, but couldn't get over the hump. On Saturday, the Golden Eagles came up with the big plays down the stretch on both ends of the court to get the win.

Chris Martin had a season-high 15 points, including a pair of free throws that iced the game in the waning seconds. LaBradford Franklin had 13 points, including a go-ahead basket that gave the Golden Eagles their first lead of the game with 1:40 to go. Andre McPhail had 12 points and six rebounds and Joshua Munzon had 10 points, including a big 3-pointer that stretched the Golden Eagles' lead to four points in the final minute.

Rob Walters had 14 points to lead the Warriors, while Tyler Barber had 12 points and Christian Bayne had 11 points.

The Golden Eagles trailed by as many as 10 points in the first half and by eight points early in the second half. The Golden Eagles still trailed 56-52 with less than three minutes to play before scoring eight straight points to take the lead for good.

Cal State L.A. shot 42.9 percent for the game (24-of-56), while Cal State Stanislaus shot 33.3 percent (18-of-54). The Golden Eagles were 7-of-13 from 3-point range, while the Warriors were 6-of-17. Cal State L.A. shot just 50 percent from the free-throw line (7-of-14), but was 7-of-9 from the line in the second half, including four straight from Franklin and Martin to preserve the lead in the final 17 seconds of the game.

Cal State L.A. was out-rebounded, 42-27, but committed only eight turnovers to 15 for the Warriors.

The Golden Eagles surrendered the first seven points of the game before Dushon Carter made a layup for Cal State L.A.'s first points. The Golden Eagles trailed 17-10 before a 3-pointer by Martin and a basket by David Hall cut the deficit to 17-15. A Martin jumper kept the deficit at 19-17, but the Warriors went on a 13-5 run to open up a 32-22 lead late in the half. Franklin, though, hit a big 3-pointer to reduce the margin to 32-25 at halftime.

The Golden Eagles fell behind 39-31 early in the second half and trailed 42-35 before a basket by McPhail, a 3-pointer by Martin and a free throw by Hall pulled them within one point, 42-41, with 10 minutes to go. The Warriors pushed the lead to 55-49 before an 11-1 run gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good. A three-point play by McPhail made it 55-52 with 3:02 to go and, after a Cal State Stanislaus free throw, Franklin hit a big 3-pointer to make it 56-55. After a defensive stop, Franklin gave the Golden Eagles their first lead with a layup with 1:40 to go.

After another defensive stop, Munzon connected on a back-breaking 3-pointer to put the Golden Eagles ahead, 60-56. The Warriors got a rebound basket from Walters to make it 60-58, but Franklin hit a pair of free throws to stretch the lead to 62-58 and, after another stop, Martin hit two free throws to put the game away.

Cal State L.A. will return home for a big game Friday night against Humboldt State.
