Game ReplayLOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team got a putback basket from
Franeka Hall just in the nick of time Friday night in its California Collegiate Athletic Association opener.
Hall rebounded a missed shot and put it back in just before the buzzer sounded to lift the Golden Eagles to an exciting 66-64 win in overtime over Cal State Stanislaus. Cal State L.A. (2-3, 1-0 CCAA) had lost all of a five-point lead in the extra period, but Hall's late heroics saved the day.
Hall had a game-high 19 points and seven for the Golden Eagles, while
Aiwekhoe Okungbowa and
Chiara DiMarco had 13 points each.
Camille Roberts had 11 points to lead Cal State Stanislaus (2-2, 0-1 CCAA).
The game was played at a rapid pace. Cal State L.A. won despite committing 35 turnovers, while Cal State Stanislaus committed 25 turnovers.
Cal State L.A. was 22-of-63 from the floor (34.9 percent) and limited Cal State Stanislaus to just 29.1 percent shooting (23-of-79). The Golden Eagles were an efficient 18-of-26 from the free-throw line, while the Warriors were only 10-of-21. The Warriors were 8-of-24 from behind 3-point range, while the Golden Eagles were 4-of-14.
Cal State L.A. enjoyed a 58-52 rebounding edge.
Kiara Harewood led the way with 15 rebounds, while
Kiah Knox had 10 rebounds and Okungbowa and Hall had seven rebounds each.
The Golden Eagles erased a late three-point deficit in regulation after a layup by Hall with 1:13 to go and a free throw by Harewood with 23 seconds left. Harewood then rebounded a miss with three seconds remaining and the game went into overtime.
The Golden Eagles got the first two baskets in overtime by Hall and Okungbowa before a jumper by Jasmine Washington made it 61-59. Okungbowa made one free throw and
Kaija Powell made two to give the Golden Eagles a 64-59 lead with 2:20 left in overtime, but Ana Burch hit a 3-pointer and two free throws to tie it at 64-64 with 1:43 remaining.
That's how the score remained until Hall was able to rebound a miss by DiMarco and put it back in for the winning points.
The game was tight throughout and neither team was able to build a lead larger than eight points. The Warriors opened up a 19-11 lead less than seven minutes into the game, but
Bree Parsons countered with a 3-pointer and Okungbowa scored on a layup to get the Golden Eagles close. The Golden Eagles eventually took a 29-28 lead after a pair of free throws by Hall and a layup by Okungbowa made it 31-28 at halftime.
A pair of free throws by DiMarco gave the Golden Eagles a 41-35 lead with 15:26 remaining, but the Warriors stormed back and took a 42-41 lead after a 3-pointer by Jasmine Washington.
Cal State L.A. took another six-point lead at 50-44 with 6:13 to go after a pair of free throws by Knox, but the Warriors went on a 9-0 run and took a 53-50 lead with four minutes to play. The Warriors maintained a three-point edge in the final stages until the basket by Hall and free throw by Harewood that sent the game into overtime.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday night with another CCAA home game against Chico State at 5:30 p.m.
