Game ReplayLOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s men's basketball team never could get untracked Friday in its California Collegiate Athletic Association game against Cal State Stanislaus.
The Golden Eagles started slowly and never did recover in a 64-55 loss to defending CCAA Tournament champion Cal State Stanislaus in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (2-2, 1-1 CCAA) trailed by just one point at halftime, but the Warriors (3-2, 1-0 CCAA) opened up leads as large as 19 points in a brilliantly-played second half.
Cal State Stanislaus, after shooting 37.5 percent in the first half, made 66.7 percent of its shots in the second half (12-of-18), including 3-of-5 from behind the 3-point arc. The Warriors also made 17-of-25 free-throw attempts and made it hard for the Golden Eagles to climb back into the game.
Cal State L.A. shot 42.2 percent for the game (19-of-45) and was just 12-of-20 from the free-throw line.
Justin Snavely hit all four of his field goal attempts and scored 12 points with four rebounds, while
Dustin Watts also had 12 points and two assists.
Joshua Munzon had 10 points, three rebounds and three assists.
Chris Read had 13 points and four assists for Cal State Stanislaus, while Rob Walters had 10 points.
The teams were even on the boards, 27-27, while Cal State L.A. committed 18 turnovers to 16 for the Warriors.
Snavely was hot from behind the 3-point arc for the Golden Eagles, going 4-for-4, but the rest of the team was 1-for-9.
David Hall had eight points for the Golden Eagles, while
Dushon Carter, in his first game of the season, had six points.
The Golden Eagles, who had trouble holding big leads in its two most recent games, didn't have that difficulty on Friday because Cal State Stanislaus led from start to finish. The Warriors scored the first six points of the game and never lost that advantage.
The Warriors opened up a 20-9 lead, but the Golden Eagles closed the first half with a 14-4 run to close to within 24-23 at halftime. Hall started the run with a free throw, layups by Watts and
Xavier Jones got it to 20-14 and a 3-pointer by Snavely made it 20-17. Cal State Stanislaus stopped the run with a pair of free throws by Kyle Gouviea, but a free throw by
Joel Brokenbrough and another 3-pointer by Snavely made it 22-21. Munzon hit a pair of free throws late in the half to make it 24-23 at halftime.
Cal State Stanislaus, though, started the second half with a 23-6 surge over the first 10 minutes of the second half to take a 47-29 lead and take control of the game. The Warriors were able to maintain double-digit leads until the final seconds when a pair of free throws by
David Hall accounted for the final margin.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday night with a conference game at home against Chico State at 7:30 p.m.
