Golden Eagles Drop Season Opener To Lancers

RIVERSIDE -- Cal State L.A.'s men's basketball team was unable to get its 2014-15 season off to a winning start against a tough opponent.

The Golden Eagles found themselves tied with California Baptist with 18 minutes to go, but the Lancers used an 11-0 run to take the lead for good and went on to an 83-70 win in Van Dyne Gym. Cal State L.A. (0-1) dropped its season opener, while California Baptist won its third straight game.

Andre McPhail had 15 points and eight rebounds to lead Cal State L.A., while Joel Brokenbrough added 14 points. Aaron Alston, Joshua Munzon and LaBradford Franklin scored nine points each.

Ryan Berg led California Baptist with a game-high 18 points, while Gelaun Wheelwright had 17 points.

Cal State L.A. shot 49 percent for the game (25-of-51), while California Baptist shot 51.7 percent (30-of-58), including a 16-of-25 performance in the second half. The Lancers hit 12 of their 27 attempts from behind the 3-point arc, while the Golden Eagles were 4-of-9. The Golden Eagles were 16-of-22 from the free-throw line, while the Lancers were 11-of-16.

California Baptist had a 34-28 rebounding edge.

The Golden Eagles trailed at halftime, 35-31, but quickly tied the game after back-to-back baskets by Alston with 18:29 to go.

California Baptist, though, responded with an 11-0 run and never looked back. The Lancers led by as many as 15 points before the Golden Eagles rallied. Munzon scored seven straight points on a 3-pointer, a two-point basket and a steal and layup to make it 56-48 with 11:47 to go and a basket by McPhail pulled the Golden Eagles to within 68-61 with six minutes remaining. California Baptist, though, was able to weather the storm and pulled away down the stretch.

Cal State L.A. will play its home opener on Monday at 7 p.m. against Fresno Pacific.
