ARCATA – Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team swept past Humboldt State Saturday night in an impressive regular-season finale and now the Golden Eagles will wait to see if their season will continue.
The Golden Eagles did their part with a 25-17, 25-21, 25-20 victory over the 'Jacks in Lumberjack Arena. Cal State L.A. (17-8, 15-7 CCAA) wrapped up sole possession of third place in the California Collegiate Athletic Association with the victory. That's the highest conference finish for the Golden Eagles since 2009 when they reached the NCAA Division II West Region championship match. The 17 regular-season wins are also the most since 2009.
Cal State L.A. was ranked 10
th in the regional rankings that were published on Wednesday and recorded a split against regionally-ranked opponents on the road to finish up. The top-eight will qualify for the tournament. The selections will be announced on Sunday night at 7 p.m. on
www.ncaa.com.
The Golden Eagles played well on Saturday while evening the season series with Humboldt State (17-9, 14-8 CCAA), which came into the match tied with Cal State L.A. for third in the conference and ranked ninth in the West Region. Cal State L.A. had a 43-29 advantage in kills in the match and hit at a .250 percentage to just .107 for the 'Jacks.
Iona Lofrano led the way with 13 kills and 11 digs, while
Kymberly Silveyra had 13 kills and eight digs.
JamieAnn Bero had 10 kills and three blocks.
Lofrano and Bero each had two service aces as well.
The Golden Eagles got off to a fast start and never really let up. The Golden Eagles jumped out to a 21-13 lead in the opening set and ultimately put the set away with a block from
Mia Alcaraz and
Loreal Carter.
The second set was tied at 16-16, but a kill by Silveyra and an attack error gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good at 18-16. A kill by Lofrano got the Golden Eagles to set point at 24-20 and a kill by Bero ended the set.
Cal State L.A. held the lead for most of the third set as well. The Golden Eagles led 21-16 following a bad set by the 'Jacks, but three straight kills by Humboldt State's Ashley Owen made it 21-19. After a Cal State L.A. timeout, the Golden Eagles made it 23-19 after a service error and a kill by Lofrano. Another attack error and a kill by Lofrano ended the match.
Cal State L.A. will now return home from Humboldt and await the word from the NCAA selection committee.
