LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team got a starring performance Sunday from someone who was honored Saturday night at the annual Billie Jean King and Friends Event.
Heather Williams, who was featured along with men's soccer player Dane Nielsen on Saturday as Billie Jean King Scholarship recipients, came out Sunday and scored both goals in a 2-0 win over San Francisco State. Williams scored both goals in a 44-second span of the second half to break a scoreless tie in the California Collegiate Athletic Association contest.
Cal State L.A. (11-1-1, 6-0 CCAA) won its sixth straight game and recorded its seventh shutout of the season.
The Golden Eagles enjoyed a 13-5 shot advantage over San Francisco State (7-5, 2-4 CCAA), but couldn't get one past San Francisco State goalkeeper Allison Land until the second half.
The Golden Eagles' best chance in the opening half came on a long shot by
Krystal Kutscher that Land was able to deflect up and over the crossbar and out of danger. Cal State L.A. ended the first half with a 10-3 advantage in shots.
The Golden Eagles finally broke through – twice – in the 67
th minute of play. The first goal came on a corner kick by
Shea Richards that was headed initially by
Joanna Espinoza to Williams, who fired in a shot from point-blank range.
Then, just 44 seconds later, Williams received a cross from
Danielle Telles and converted right at the doorstep for her second goal of the game and fourth of the season. Williams has scored all four of her goals in the last four games.
Du made four saves for the Golden Eagles, while Land made five saves in goal for the Gators. Cal State L.A. had a slim 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
Williams had a match-high four shots for the Golden Eagles, while Kutscher and
Veronika Steen had two shots each.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday with a home match against Sonoma State at 4:30 p.m.
