Golden Eagles Overwhelmed By No. 8 San Bernardino

Box Score SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State L.A.'s men's basketball team ran into a red-hot Cal State San Bernardino team that was firing on all cylinders and the results were not good.

The Golden Eagles were limited to just 28.2 percent shooting and the No. 8 Coyotes cruised to a 92-51 victory Friday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game in Coussoulis Arena. Cal State L.A. (10-5, 7-4 CCAA) was undone by a 29-6 first-half run that gave Cal State San Bernardino (14-1, 11-0 CCAA) early control of the game. The Golden Eagles lost for the fourth time in the last five games and fell into a three-way tie for third place in the conference with Chico State and Cal State Stanislaus.

James Tillman had another strong game and scored a game-high 22 points. Duce Zaid added 12 points for the Golden Eagles.

Andrew Young led three Coyotes in double figures with 20 points and nine rebounds. Juan Martinez added 14 points and Kirby Gardner had 13 points.

The Golden Eagles struggled almost from the onset. Cal State L.A. hit its first two shots, but then went 4-for-25 from the floor for the remainder of the first half. The Golden Eagles were also just 1-of-10 in the opening half from 3-point range. For the game, the Golden Eagles were just 16-of-57 and 2-of-15 from 3-point range. Zaid had both 3-pointers for the Golden Eagles.

Cal State San Bernardino, on the other hand, was 30-of-57 from the floor (52.6 percent) and 7-of-24 from 3-point range. The Coyotes were also 25-of-39 from the free-throw line, while the Golden Eagles were just 17-of-30.

The Golden Eagles were also out-rebounded, 47-35.

Cal State L.A. led only twice, at 2-0 after Tillman opened the game with a basket and at 4-2 after Zaid scored. A basket by Xavier Jones kept the Golden Eagles within four points at 12-8, but Cal State L.A. then endured a six-and-a-half minute scoring drought as Cal State San Bernardino went on a 14-0 run. A pair of Tillman free throws stopped the string, but the Coyotes surged to their biggest lead of the first half, 41-14. A basket by Aaron Alston and a 3-pointer by Zaid late in the half made it 43-21 at halftime.

The Golden Eagles' struggles continued in the second half. Cal State L.A. never got closer than 21 points and trailed by as many as 48 points.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday with a road game at UC San Diego.
