Golden Eagles Make It Two In A Row With Win Over Saints

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s men's soccer team made it two in a row with another electric win at home against an NCAA Division II West Region opponent.

The Golden Eagles scored three goals in each half and posted a 6-1 win over Saint Martin's of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Sunday at Jesse Owens Track. Cal State L.A. (2-0) outscored its two non-conference opponents by a combined count of 9-1.

Cal State L.A. got a pair of goals from Halil Tozar and a goal and an assist from Tobias Tobrant. Sammy Gonzalez, Sigifredo Torres and Jordan Payne also scored goals for the Golden Eagles. Juan Ochoa and Andre Bissmark had two assists each. Saint Martin's (0-2) got a goal from Dylan Gaydosh late in the game.

Steven Barrera played the first 74 minutes in goal for the Golden Eagles and made three saves without allowing a goal. Carlos Alvarez made one save while finishing up in net for Cal State L.A.

Cal State L.A. had a 22-8 advantage in shots and a 6-4 edge in corner kicks. Saint Martin's goalkeepers JJ Olson and Eric Owen combined for seven saves.

For the second game in a row, Cal State L.A. took a quick lead in the first minutes of the game. Gonzalez got the team's first goal after a stunning counter-attack following a Saint Martin's corner kick. The ball was cleared to Ochoa, who made a strong run up field and threaded a pass to Gonzalez, who split two defenders and beat the goalie for his first goal of the season.

Gonzalez almost had a second goal just moments later after pouncing on a Saint Martin's turnover, but a Saint Martin's defender was able to clear away his shot before it went in the goal.

Tozar made it 2-0 with the first of his two goals. He overpowered a Saint Martin's defender, got around the goalkeeper and knocked a shot into the net in the 21st minute to complete a nice play that included assists from Ochoa and Andre Bissmark.

Bissmark picked up his second assist of the game after a nice touch pass to Tozar, who scored to make it 3-0.

Torres picked up his first goal of the season in the 60th minute to make it 4-0. Troy Dumlao got the assist with a through pass to Torres, who scored with a low shot to the far post.

Tobrant made it 4-0 in the 81st minute when he received a perfect pass from Luis Trujillo right in front of the goal and knocked it in. Tobrant was on the giving end of the Golden Eagles' final goal when Payne completed a nice give-and-go with a nice shot to the far post.

Saint Martin's scored on a corner kick in the 89the minute when Dylan Gaydosh went up in a crowd and headed in a cross from Emil Kirov.

Cal State L.A. will open California Collegiate Athletic Association action on Friday with a home game against Cal Poly Pomona at 7:30 p.m.
