Box Score POMONA -- Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team was firing on all cylinders Saturday night and the Golden Eagles recorded a sweep in their first California Collegiate Athletic Association road swing of the season.
The Golden Eagles rallied from an early first-set deficit and never lost their momentum in a 25-20, 25-19, 25-14 victory over Cal Poly Pomona Saturday night in Kellogg Gym. Cal State L.A. (7-3, 2-0 CCAA) came into the match following a five-set win at Humboldt State on Thursday to open conference play.
Cal State L.A. had an effective attack all night and hit at a red-hot .370 percentage to Cal Poly Pomona's .206. The Golden Eagles had a big 48-33 advantage in kills and a 6-4 edge in blocks.
Iona Lofrano put the finishing touches on an outstanding week. After recording a career-high 27 kills on Thursday in the win at Humboldt State, she added 18 more to go along with two aces in three sets on Saturday. She hit at an outstanding .486 percentage.
Kymberly Silveyra also had a big night, recording 14 kills and two aces and recording a .370 hitting percentage. She, too, had a big week and was coming off a 22-kill performance at Humboldt State.
Bethanee Boggs added six kills and four blocks, while
Alexandra Bura had 32 set assists and 10 digs.
The Golden Eagles started slowly and trailed, 7-2, early in the first set. Cal State L.A. battled back and took its first lead at 11-10 after a kill by Lofrano. The set was tied at 18-18 before kills by Lofrano and
JamieAnn Bero put the Golden Eagles ahead for good. The Broncos got to within 21-20, but the Golden Eagles used a kill by Lofrano, a block by Bura and Bero, an ace from
April Reyes and a block by Bura and Boggs to close out the set.
Cal State L.A. came up big in the latter stages of the second set as well. The Golden Eagles led by as many as five points early, 12-7, before the Broncos battled back to 16-16. A Cal Poly Pomona service error gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good and back-to-back kills by Lofrano boosted the lead to 19-16. Cal Poly Pomona pulled to within 20-19, but a Bronco attack error, a kill by Bura, a block by Bura and Bero and kills by Boggs and Silveyra ended the set.
The Golden Eagles didn't slow up at all following the intermission and completed the sweep in impressive fashion. A serving run by Bura staked the Golden Eagles to a 5-0 lead and another strong serving run by Silveyra boosted the lead to 10-1. A Silveyra kill gave the Golden Eagles a 20-8 lead and Cal State L.A. quickly finished off the win.
Cal State L.A. will play its first home match of the season on Friday, Sept. 27, against San Francisco State in the Eagles Nest at 7 p.m.
