Golden Eagles Battle, But Fall To CCAA Leaders

Box Score

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team had its moments, but just not enough of them to topple the California Collegiate Athletic Association leaders.

The Golden Eagles battled well in all three sets, but still came up short against Cal State San Bernardino, 25-21, 25-21, 25-20 Friday night in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (11-7, 6-4 CCAA) had a three-match winning streak snapped, while Cal State San Bernardino (14-4, 10-0 CCAA) won its 11th consecutive match.

Iona Lofrano had 15 kills and two blocks to lead the Golden Eagles, while Kymberly Silveyra had nine kills and one ace.

Brenna McIntosh had 12 kills and six blocks to lead the Coyotes, while Danielle Newcombe had 10 kills and 10 digs.

Cal State San Bernardino had a 43-39 edge in kills and hit at a .300 percentage to .219 for the Golden Eagles. The Golden Eagles had a 9-7 edge in blocks. Cal State L.A., though, hurt itself with 11 service errors and five aces, while Cal State San Bernardino had four aces and four errors.

Alexandra Bura had 30 set assists and two aces for the Golden Eagles, while April Reyes had a match-high 15 digs.

The Golden Eagles started slowly and fell behind, 16-6, in the opening set before coming to life. Behind a strong serving run by Bura, the Golden Eagles scored eight straight points and cut the deficit to 16-14 following a kill by Lofrano. The Golden Eagles were still within two at 20-18 after a kill by JamieAnn Bero, but a serving error started the Coyotes on a 4-0 run that got them to set point. Kills by Silveyra and Lofrano and an attack error by the Coyotes made it 24-21, but a kill by Ashley Solis ended the set.

Cal State L.A. led early in the second set and took an 8-6 advantage after a solo block by Lofrano. The Coyotes, though, scored the next five points to take an 11-8 lead and never trailed again. The Golden Eagles tied the frame at 20-20 after a block by Bura and Bero, but the Coyotes scored the next three points and went on to take the set.

Cal State San Bernardino jumped out to a quick 8-2 lead in the third set, but, once again, the Golden Eagles rallied. Cal State L.A. pulled to within 9-8 after back-to-back kills from Silveyra, but Cal State San Bernardino regrouped and scored the next three points. An ace by Bethanee Boggs cut the deficit to 20-17, but that was as close as the Golden Eagles would get. After the Coyotes had apparently closed the match out at 25-18, the teams were called back on the court for a replay of the final point. Kills by Bero and Lofrano kept the Golden Eagles in it at 24-20, but a kill by McIntosh ultimately ended the match.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday with a road match at UC San Diego.
