Golden Eagles Drop Another Double Overtime Heartbreaker

Box Score LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team has not enjoyed good fortune in its California Collegiate Athletic Association home games season.

The Golden Eagles went into a second overtime for the third straight home contest and, for the second time, fell in a heartbreaker, this time a 1-0 decision to Cal State Monterey Bay. Cal State L.A. (3-3-2, 2-3-1 CCAA) also lost to UC San Diego in a second overtime and battled to a 1-1 tie with Cal State East Bay on Friday.

The Golden Eagles saw a couple of golden opportunities unfulfilled in the first overtime and watched as Cal State Monterey Bay got a rebound goal from Regan Porteoous just 2:04 into the second overtime to end it.

Cal State Monterey Bay (5-2, 3-2 CCAA) has already eclipsed its totals for overall wins and conference wins from last season.

Cal State L.A. had a 13-9 edge in shots, including a 6-0 in an impressive showing in the first overtime period. Cal State Monterey Bay had the only two shots of the second overtime, one from Kristen Womack from point-blank range that Gabriela Batmani was able to deflect, but Porteous punched the ball into an empty net to end the contest.

Chances were few and far between in the match, but both teams had shots hit metal before it was over. Cal State Monterey Bay had the two best chances in the first half when a shot by Womack in the eighth minute hit the post and a shot by Hanna Cobb from close range sailed just wide in the 35th minute.

The Golden Eagles had the better chances in a real defensive struggle throughout the second half. A shot by Tera Piserchio went wide early in the period and a flick by Heather Williams went high in the 87th minute.

Cal State L.A. had several chances in the first overtime. A free kick from long range by Sydney Mullen sailed just over the crossbar in the 94th minute and Stephanie Lopez had a hard shot hit the post in the 95th minute. Williams had a shot go wide in the 96th minute and Janelle Hanna had a header off a free kick by Raquel Gervas sail just wide in the 99th minute.

Batmani made her only save of the game in the second overtime when she stopped Womack, who had gotten around a defender and broken in free. Porteous was the first to the rebound as it trickled away and got the game-winner.

Cal State L.A. will return to action next Friday at Cal State San Bernardino.
