Golden Eagles Settle For 2-2 Tie At Dixie State College

SAINT GEORGE, UTAH -- Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team opened its 2012 season with an eventful tie against host Dixie State College.

After a scoreless first half, the Golden Eagles and Red Storm each scored a pair of second-half goals and the game ended in a 2-2 draw. Cal State L.A., ranked 13th in the nation by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, enjoyed a 21-11 advantage in shots and rallied from a 2-1 deficit to earn the draw.

Cal State L.A. had a 6-3 edge in shots in the two overtime periods. Gabriella Batmani had five saves for the Golden Eagles, three in the final six minutes of regulation and two in the first overtime period.

Heather Williams had a goal and an assist in her Golden Eagle debut. Shereen Khoobbagha scored the equalizer for the Golden Eagles in the 62nd minute.

The Golden Eagles opened the scoring in the 52nd minute when Williams scored with an assist from Tahne Apo. Williams received a pass from Apo and scored from about seven yards out.

Dixie State College, though, struck for two goals in a two-minute span to take the lead. Kristina Page scored the Red Storm's first goal with a drive from about 20 yards out and Jennifer Mason gave Dixie State the lead in the 58th minute when she knocked home a rebound from about eight yards away.

Williams hit the post with a shot in the 60th minute, but Khoobbagha tied it for the Golden Eagles in the 62nd minute when she got a pass from Williams in the center of the box and knocked it into the net.

Both teams had chances in the final minutes of regulation. Williams, Apo and Stephanie Lopez had attempts saved in the final eight minutes and Batmani made three saves in the final six minutes.

Cal State L.A. had five shots in the second overtime period, but was unable to score. Williams had five shots in the game, while Khoobbagha had four.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday with a contest against Grand Canyon at Dixie State.
