Golden Eagles' Upset Bid Falls Short At UC San Diego

LA JOLLA -- Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team threw quite a scare into the No. 1-ranked team in the country, but saw its upset bid fall short.

The Golden Eagles led by as many as eight points in the first half and trailed by just two points with four minutes remaining, but UC San Diego closed the game out with a big run to remain undefeated with a 78-63 win in RIMAC Arena. Cal State L.A. (13-6, 11-4) had its six-game winning streak snapped, while the Tritons (21-0, 15-0) retained its stranglehold on the California Collegiate Athletic Association lead.

Lacy Ramon scored 14 points to lead three Golden Eagles in double figures. Jazzi Johnson had 13 points and six rebounds and Samantha Hansen added 10 points.

UC San Diego had tremendous balance and had four players in double figures. Daisy Fedor led the way with 20 points, Lauren Freidenberg had 17 points and 10 rebounds, Chelsea Carlisle had 16 points and Erin Dastremont had 12 points.

Cal State L.A. shot 47.3 percent for the game (26-of-55), while limiting UC San Diego to just 38.9 percent (23-of-72). The Golden Eagles were just 2-of-9 from 3-point range, while UC San Diego made seven in 28 tries. UC San Diego had a 41-35 rebounding edge, while Cal State L.A. committed twice as many turnovers, 22, as UC San Diego.

The Golden Eagles started quickly and, after allowing a 3-pointer to open the game, scored the next 10 points to take a 10-3 lead. Ramon scored eight of the 10 points, while Johnson also scored. A 3-pointer by Tessondra Williams and a basket by Richelle Najera gave the Golden Eagles their biggest lead of the game, 15-7. A 3-pointer by Erika Ruiz equalled that eight-point edge, 24-16, with 5:57 left in the half.

A basket by Hansen kept the lead at seven points, 26-19, with 4:39 left in the half, but UC San Diego went on a 10-0 run to take a 29-26 advantage and never trailed again. A basket by Johnson made it a 29-28 at halftime.

Cal State L.A. never regained the lead, but stayed within striking range until the final two minutes. A basket by Maryum Jenkins cut the gap to 35-34 with 16 minutes to go, but UC San Diego scored the next eight points to open up a 43-34 lead. The Golden Eagles battled back and pulled to within two points, 61-59, after a basket by Jenkins with four minutes to go, but the Tritons responded with a 10-0 run to finally take control of the game. A basket by Najera stopped the run with a basket to make it 71-61, but UC San Diego stretched its advantage over the final minute.

The Golden Eagles will return to action on Saturday with a road game at Cal State San Bernardino.
