Box Score RIVERSIDE -- Cal State L.A.'s men's basketball team had to work overtime Saturday night in its non-conference game at Cal Baptist and the extra time was not kind to the Golden Eagles.
The Golden Eagles gave up the game-tying basket late in regulation and were then outscored, 14-7, in the overtime period and fell to Cal Baptist, 77-70, Saturday night in Van Dyne Gym. Cal State L.A. (1-2) rallied from a 10-point second-half deficit and led by three with 1:11 to go, but could not hold off Cal Baptist (3-0).
James Tillman had another big game for the Golden Eagles, pouring in a game-high 23 points.
Trevor Wiseman also had a strong game with 13 points and eight rebounds.
Anthony Cosentino had 23 points and eight rebounds to lead Cal Baptist, including the game-tying basket with two seconds left in regulation that sent the game into overtime. Lake Evans had 12 points, Anthony Romero had 11 points and Ivan Patterson had 10 points.
Joshua Munzon had nine points and four rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while
Jordan Richard had nine points, five rebounds, two blocks and two assists.
Cal State L.A. shot 42.9 percent (27-of-63) for the game, while Cal Baptist shot 44.8 percent (30-of-67). The Golden Eagles, though, were just 1-of-15 from behind the 3-point arc and made only 15-of-28 free-throw attempts. Cal Baptist was 5-of-17 from behind the arc and 12-of-18 from the free-throw line.
The Golden Eagles trailed for much of the first half and faced an eight-point deficit at 21-13 with 9:19 remaining in the period. A steal and layup by
Quinton Watkins got the Golden Eagles to within 23-21 and a three-point play by Tillman pushed the Golden Eagles ahead, 28-27. A pair of free throws by Wiseman gave the Golden Eagles a 35-32 edge and Cal State L.A. settled for a 35-34 halftime lead.
Cal Baptist, though, opened the second half with a 16-5 run and took its biggest lead of the game at 50-40. Cal State L.A. answered with a 10-0 run thanks to a layup by Richard, a layup by Wiseman, a dunk by Tillman and two more baskets by Tillman. A jumper by Richard tied it again at 52-52 before Cal Baptist scored the next five points to take a 57-52 lead.
Cal State L.A. rallied again, though, getting a basket by Tillman, two free throws by Munzon and a layup by Richard to take a 58-57 lead with 2:52 to go. Tillman scored again to stretch the lead to 60-57 with 1:56 to go and an offensive rebound and basket by Wiseman made it 62-59 with 1:11 remaining.
After Cal Baptist hit two free throws to cut the deficit to 62-61, Wiseman was fouled after grabbing an offensive rebound and made one free throw with nine seconds left to give Cal State L.A. a 63-61 lead. Consentino then tied it with his basket with two seconds to go.
Cal State L.A. never led in the overtime period. A three-point play by Wiseman tied it at 67-67 with 3:20 remaining, but Cal Baptist scored the next six points and never looked back. A 3-pointer by Munzon got the Golden Eagles to within three points at 73-70 with 1:09 to go, but that's as close as the Golden Eagles would get.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Friday night with a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest at UC San Diego.
