Box Score LA JOLLA -- Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team unleashed plenty of shots Friday, especially in an impressive second-half performance, but fell short against No. 25 UC San Diego in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest at Triton Field.
The Golden Eagles outshot the Tritons by a lopsided 21-9 margin, but a goal in the 10th minute lifted UC San Diego to a 1-0 victory. The Golden Eagles had a big 14-4 advantage in the second half, including a shot from
Tahne Apo that hit the crossbar. Cal State L.A. (5-4-4, 4-4-3 CCAA) had a three-match winning streak in La Jolla snapped by the loss.
UC San Diego (9-1-2, 7-1-2 CCAA) extended its CCAA South Division lead with the victory and is now eight points clear of the Golden Eagles.
Cal State L.A. probably played well enough to deserve a different fate against the Tritons, who got a header goal from Izzy Pozurama in the first 10 minutes of the match. Jessica Wi had the assist.
The Golden Eagles, afer trailing at halftime, came out aggressively in the second period and peppered the UC San Diego goal with 14 shots. Their best scoring chance came in the 60th minute when a shot by Apo hit the crossbar. Moments later, a shot by
Norie Pablo was stopped by UC San Diego goalkeeper Kelcie Brodsky. Cal State L.A. also had another bid by Apo that seemed destined for the upper part of the goal, but Brodsky was able to reach her right arm up at the last moment and tip the ball up and eventually came down the ball to thwart the chance.
Cal State L.A. goalkeeper
Gabriella Batmani also made some big saves, her best coming on a second-half bid by Gabi Hernandez and a later stop on a header by Pozurama.
The Golden Eagles tried furiously down the stretch to tie it, earning a final corner kick from
Megan Ollar with one minute to play, but UC San Diego's outstanding defense held the Golden Eagles at bay.
Apo,
Stephanie Lopez and Pablo all had four shots each for the Golden Eagles. Batmani made three saves, while UC San Diego's Brodsky made six.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Sunday with a home game against Cal State San Bernardino beginning at 2 p.m.
