Golden Eagles Bounce Back With CCAA Sweep Over Gators

SAN FRANCISCO -- Cal State L.A.'s women's volleyball team let one get away earlier this week, but the Golden Eagles left nothing to chance on Friday.

The Golden Eagles took charge early and swept past San Francisco State, 25-14, 25-7, 25-22, in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match in The Swamp. Cal State L.A. (13-12, 10-10 CCAA) won for the third time in its last four matches.

Cal State L.A. was unable to hold a 2-0 sets lead against Cal Poly Pomona on Wednesday, but the Golden Eagles didn't let up at all on Friday. Cal State L.A. hit at a .392 percentage for the match and held San Francisco State (13-11, 9-10 CCAA) to just a .053 percentage. Cal State L.A. had a 40-28 edge in kills and a 5-2 advantage in blocks. The Golden Eagles also served well and had five service aces.

Natalia Gonzalez had 13 kills and hit at a .440 percentage to lead the Golden Eagles, while Kymberly Silveyra had eight kills, three service aces and a team-high 11 digs. Kaylynne Taeatafa had 31 set assists, four kills and two blocks.

Robyn Hall had a team-high seven kills for the Gators.

Silveyra had a long serving run in the opening set that enabled the Golden Eagles to jump out to a 22-11 lead. A pair of aces and kills by Gonzalez and Chelsea Hamilton fueled the run. A kill by Gonzalez made it 22-11, a kill by Mary Laupepa made it 24-13 and a service error in the set.

Cal State L.A. broke open a 4-4 tie in the second set and went on a 21-3 tear. Taeatafa served for 10 straight points in the set. A kill by Hamilton made it 22-6, a Silveyra kill made it 23-7 and a later kill by Silveyra ended the set.

The third set was a tough battle throughout. With the score tied at 18-18, back-to-back kills by Silveyra and an attack error put the Golden Eagles ahead, 21-18. A Gonzalez kill got the Golden Eagles to match point at 24-21 and a kill by Laupepa ended the contest.

Cal State L.A. will return to action next Thursday with a match at Cal State Stanislaus.
