Golden Eagles Get Game-Winner In The Final Minute

Box Score

ARCATA -- Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team surrendered a lead for the first time this season, but the Golden Eagles made up for it with a dramatic game-winner in the final minute of regulation.

Justine Telles scored off a free kick with just 32 seconds remaining in regulation to lift No. 24 Cal State L.A. to a 2-1 California Collegiate Athletic Association win over Humboldt State Sunday at College Creek Field. Cal State L.A. (8-2-2, 6-2-2 CCAA) stretched its unbeaten streak to eight games with the win. The Golden Eagles are 6-0-2 over that stretch. Humboldt State (1-8-2, 0-8-2) was coming off consecutive 1-0 defeats.

Cal State L.A. kept its hold on second place in the CCAA South Division with 20 points.

The Golden Eagles had a 17-10 advantage in shots, including an 8-2 advantage in the second half. Both teams had two corner kicks, including the one that led to Humboldt State's game-tying goal in the second half. Jessie Walworth made two saves for the Golden Eagles, while Amber Woolcock made five saves for the Lumberjacks.

Cal State L.A. took a first-half lead for the second straight game. Andrea Lammers scored her second goal of the season with an assist from Janet Mendez in the 24th minute. Mendez send in a cross and Lammers headed it over the Humboldt State goalkeeper for the goal. Mendez picked up her team-leading third assist of the season.

The Golden Eagles took the 1-0 lead into halftime. Cal State L.A., which has allowed only five goals all season, had not given up a lead before Sunday. The Golden Eagles lost a pair of games by 1-0 scores and their two 1-1 ties came after surrendering the first goal of the game.

That changed, though, when a corner kick from Colette Behen was collected near the penalty shot line and shot into the net in the 76th minute.

That's how the score remained until the final minute. After a Humboldt State foul, the Golden Eagles converted on the free kick when Telles found the back of the net for her first goal of the season.

Cal State L.A. will return to action with a road game at No. 2 UC San Diego next Friday.
