Golden Eagles Put Up Good Battle In Loss To Wildcats

CHICO -- Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball wasn't able to snap its losing streak Saturday night, but the Golden Eagles gave perennial power Chico State fits before finally falling.

The Golden Eagles tied the game twice in the final minute, but Chico State hit three late free throws to post a narrow 63-60 California Collegiate Athletic Association victory Saturday in Acker Gym. Cal State L.A. (6-12, 3-11 CCAA) lost its sixth straight game, but had one of its best games during that stretch.

Cal State L.A. had a big edge in turnovers, forcing 20 while committing only eight. The Golden Eagles, though, shot just 26.7 percent and were out-rebounded, 63-33. Cal State L.A. made 25-of-28 free-throw attempts, while Chico State made 21-of-32. The Wildcats did not record a basket in the last five minutes of the game, but converted seven of their eight free-throw attempts during that stretch.

Lacy Ramon had 24 points and 10 rebounds for the Golden Eagles, while Gretchen Tiernan had 12 points. Sonia Miller had 10 points and five rebounds.

Courtney Harrison had 13 points and eight rebounds to lead Chico State (13-5, 10-4 CCAA). Analise Riezebos had 11 points and nine rebounds.

Cal State L.A. never led in the game and trailed by as many as 10 points early in the game. The Golden Eagles trimmed the deficit to 29-27 by halftime and never trailed by more than five points in the second half.

The Golden Eagles tied the game four times, including twice late in the game. A pair of free throws by Miller made it 58-58 and a basket by Tiernan tied it at 60-60 with 20 seconds left. After Chico State made two free throws with 12 seconds left, the Golden Eagles went for a 3-pointer and the win, but Tiernan's attempt just missed with five seconds left.

Cal State L.A. started slowly and trailed by 10 points, 16-6. The Golden Eagles, though, took advantage of several Chico State turnovers and climbed back into the game. Two free throws by Miller and two by Ramon made it 29-27 at halftime.

A pair of free throws by Ramon tied the game at 41-41 with 12:45 to go, while a basket by Brionna Baker tied it at 47-47 with 9:33 remaining.

After Chico State grabbed its biggest lead of the second half, 54-49, a 3-pointer by Tiernan brought the Golden Eagles back to within two points and set the stage for a frantic finish.

Cal State L.A. will return to action next Friday at Cal Poly Pomona.
