Golden Eagles See Big Second Half Rally Fall Just Short

LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team roared back from a sizeable second-half deficit only to come up just short in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game against Humboldt State.
 
The Golden Eagles erased a 14-point deficit in the final 12 minutes, but fell to the Lumberjacks, 71-70, Friday night in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (6-9, 3-8 CCAA) surged to a three-point lead with less than two minutes to play, but Humboldt State got a go-ahead 3-pointer by Kayla Williams with 50 seconds remaining and held off the Golden Eagles.
 
Lacy Ramon had 22 points and five rebounds for the Golden Eagles despite being limited to 19 minutes because of foul trouble. Sonia Miller had 14 points and three assists and Gretchen Tiernan had 12 points, three rebounds, four assists and three steals.
 
Jeanette Dewitt had 16 points to lead Humboldt State (8-7, 5-6 CCAA), while Kelly Kime had 12 points, Williams had 11 points and Jenna Hamilton had 10 points. Bree Halsey had eight points and 11 rebounds before fouling out.
 
Cal State L.A. shot 39.2 percent for the game (20-of-51), while Humboldt State made 42.3 percent of its shots (22-of-52). Both teams shot well from behind the 3-point arc, with the Lumberjacks making 13 of its 32 tries and the Golden Eagles making 10 of 22.
 
The Golden Eagles were also an efficient 20-of-23 from the free-throw line and Humboldt State was 14-of-17. Cal State L.A. forced 17 turnovers and committed 11.
 
Humboldt State sizzled in the first half from 3-point range, knocking down nine in the first 20 minutes and racing to a 36-26 halftime lead.
 
The Lumberjacks continued their assault in the opening stages of the second half and opened up a 48-34 lead with 12:20 to play following a free throw by Halsey.
 
Cal State L.A., though, began chipping away at the lead and went on a 10-2 run highlighted by 3-pointers by Miller and Lorin Hammer that made it 50-44 with 10 minutes to play.
 
A 3-pointer by Kime stopped the run, but the Golden Eagles kept up the pressure and eventually tied the game at 62-62 following a three-point play by Miller with 3:30 to go.
 
Miller hit a 3-pointer to give the Golden Eagles a 65-64 lead and two free throws by Ramon made it 67-64.
 
Lisa Petty hit a pair of free throws for the Lumberjacks to make it 67-66 and a 3-pointer by Williams put the Lumberjacks ahead for good. Ramon hit one free throw with 20 seconds left to make it a one-point game, 69-68, but Williams knocked down two free throws to boost the lead to 71-68.
 
Belt rebounded a missed shot and scored to make it 71-70 with three seconds to go, but Humboldt State was able to inbound the ball and run out the clock.
 
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday with a home game against Sonoma State.
