LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team got back on track Sunday after its disappointing defeat on Friday.
The Golden Eagles got a hat trick from
Liz Franco and another goal from Anne Marie Tangorra and beat Cal State Monterey Bay, 4-0, Sunday at Jesse Owens Stadium. Cal State L.A. (4-1, 3-1 CCAA) was coming off a 2-1 loss to San Francisco State on Friday.
The Golden Eagles were ranked seventh in the nation entering the week.
Franco picked up the second three-goal game of her Cal State L.A. career. She accomplished the feat for the first time in the CCAA Championship Game last November in a 4-0 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills.
Franco also picked up an assist on Sunday, giving her 34 for her Cal State L.A. career and extending the new CCAA career mark she set on Friday.
Tangorra also continued her torrid scoring streak. She picked up her team-leading sixth goal of the season and has recorded at least one goal in all five Cal State L.A. games so far. She also had an assist on Franco's first goal.
Cal State Monterey Bay (1-5, 0-4 CCAA) got six saves from goalkeeper Graciela Holguin.
Cal State L.A. had a 19-6 advantage in shots.
Gabriella Batmani made four saves to pick up her first win of the season.
Both teams had three corner kicks.
Franco put the Golden Eagles ahead in the 14th minute when she received a pass in the box from Tangorra and tucked a shot inside the far post.
Tangorra made it 2-0 in the 36th minute when she drilled a shot from the top of the box just under the crossbar.
The game stayed at 2-0 until the latter stages of the game when Franco scored twice in a five-minute span to put the game out of reach. Thomas set up the first one when she sent in a cross that was headed in by Franco. Then, Rodwell sent a free kick into the box and that, too, was headed into the goal by Franco.
Cal State L.A. will play its next four matches on the road, beginning next Friday at Cal Poly Pomona.
