LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team was unable to duplicate its biggest win of the season and dropped its 2009-10 finale.
The Golden Eagles turned the ball over 31 times and fell to Chico State, 71-52, Friday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game in the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (4-23, 2-20 CCAA) lost its last 12 games of the season after beating the Wildcats for the first time since 2001 earlier this season in Chico.
Chico State (19-8, 16-6 CCAA) got on a roll after its Jan. 22 defeat to the Golden Eagles. Since dropping that 58-54 decision, Chico State finished the season on a 11-1 run. The Wildcats finished third in the conference and will open play in the CCAA Championship Tournament on Tuesday.
Jazzi Johnson had another solid game for the Golden Eagles. She had a game-high 20 points and eight rebounds, while
Shatori Dearman had an 11-point, 10-rebound double-double.
Sonia Miller had seven points and four rebounds.
Courtney Harrison led Chico State with 20 points with some outstanding shooting. She made 6-of-7 from the floor, including 5-of-6 from behind the 3-point arc. Synchro Bull had 16 points and five rebounds.
The Golden Eagles shot 38.8 percent from the floor, while Chico State made 39.1 percent of its attempts. The Wildcats, though, knocked down eight 3-pointers, while Cal State L.A. made only one of its 10 tries. Cal State L.A. made 13 of its 17 free-throw tries, while Chico State was 9-of-17.
Cal State L.A. enjoyed a 43-39 rebounding edge.
Cal State L.A. played well early, scoring the first three points of the game after a three-point play by Johnson and the Golden Eagles were tied at 20-20 with 4:40 remaining in the first half. Chico State, though, took the lead for good with back-to-back 3-pointers by Harrison and eventually moved out to a 34-24 halftime lead.
Chico State led by double-digit margins for the entire second half and built its biggest lead, 71-46, with 1:11 to play. Johnson sparked a late Golden Eagle run with a pair of steals and six quick points.
