LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team got three first-half goals and made them stand up in a California Collegiate Athletic Association win over Cal State East Bay.
Ann Marie Tangorra scored twice and
Stacey Rodwell added a third goal and the Golden Eagles blanked the Pioneers, 3-0, Friday evening at Jesse Owens Stadium in the Billie Jean King Sports Complex. Cal State L.A. (8-2, 7-2 CCAA) stretched its lead in the CCAA South Division to four points with the victory.
Cal State East Bay (5-5-2, 3-5-1 CCAA) ended up with a 10-8 advantage in shots, but was unable to score against a Cal State L.A. defense that has given up only one goal in its last four games. That goal came on a penalty kick.
Cal State L.A., which moved back into the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's national poll at No. 15, scored all three goals in the first 28 minutes of the match. The Golden Eagles had beaten the Pioneers, 6-0, in the first meeting between the two programs, but Cal State East Bay had responded by going 3-2-1 in its next six games before Friday's contest.
Tangorra opened the scoring in the 10
th minute after passes from
Natalie Martin and
Stacey Rodwell found her in the box. She knocked a shot inside the far post for her eighth goal of the season.
Tangorra made it 2-0 in the 21st minute when she fired a shot from the left side of the box through traffic and just inside the far post. Her ninth goal of the season is now a team high.
Rodwell completed the scoring in the 28
th minute after
Gabbi Segall was fouled just outside the box. Rodwell took the free kick and placed it perfectly just under the crossbar for her second goal of the season.
Gabriella Batmani made eight saves for the Golden Eagles and recorded her fourth shutout of the season. She made four stops in each half.
Nina Cefalo made three saves for the Pioneers.
Cal State L.A. will return to action with a home match on Sunday at 2 p.m. against UC San Diego, which pulled into second place in the CCAA South Division after a win over Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday.
