Golden Eagles Struggle Again In 1-0 Loss To Humboldt St.

Box Score

LOS ANGELES -- Cal State L.A.'s men's team had another tough day on offense Sunday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match against Humboldt State.

The Golden Eagles were blanked for the fifth time this season and fell to the Lumberjacks, 1-0, at Jesse Owens Stadium in the Billie Jean King Sports Complex. Cal State L.A. (7-5-1, 6-5-1 CCAA) scored in the first four minutes in a 1-1 tie against Sonoma State on Friday, but went scoreless the rest of the weekend.

Humboldt State (3-8-3, 3-7-2 CCAA) beat the Golden Eagles for the second straight year. Last year, as the No. 1-ranked team in the nation, Cal State L.A. fell by a 3-0 count to the Lumberjacks.

The lone goal of the game came in the 54th minute when Josh Suggs got to a rebound of a shot by Zack Hammond and quickly shot it inside the far post. Hammond's shot was blocked in front,  but the ball came out to Suggs, who didn't miss for his team-leading fifth goal of the season.

Cal State L.A. had a slim 14-12 advantage in shots and a 5-4 edge in corner kicks. Humboldt State goalkeeper Kyle Verde made six saves, while Thaddeus Caraway had five saves for the Golden Eagles.

It was a frustrating day for the Golden Eagles, who had some good scoring chance early in the contest. David Hauser had a free kick sail just over the crossbar about five minutes in and Tyler Coombes had a good look after a give-and-go.

Hauser ran down a long pass from Tony Hernandez in the 17th minute, but his shot went just outside the far post. Verde came out of the crease to thwart a chance by Gonzalo Pulgar in the 30th minute.

After the Lumberjacks took their 1-0 lead, the pace of the game picked up, but the scoring did not. Suggs had a good chance for his second goal shortly after he broke the scoreless ite, but his shot from close range went over the goal.

Julian Ringhof had a header in the 73rd minute that Verde was just able to get a piece of to deflect out of harm's way and Coombes had a hard shot sail over the crossbar with three minutes remaining.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Wednesday with a home game against Cal State Dominguez Hills.
