Golden Eagles Fall Short Against CS San Bernardino

SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team stayed within striking distance for most of Friday's California Collegiate Athletic Association contest against Cal State San Bernardino, but the Golden Eagles came up empty down the stretch.

The Golden Eagles led late in the first half and trailed by only five points well into the second half before faltering late in a 65-52 loss to Cal State San Bernardino Friday in San Bernardino. Cal State L.A. (3-10, 1-7 CCAA) dropped its third straight game.

Jazzi Johnson had another prolific game for the Golden Eagles. She scored a game-high 21 points and also had a team-high six rebounds. Johnson, who leads the CCAA in field-goal percentage, made 8-of-11 from the floor in Friday's game. She also had three of the Golden Eagles' five steals.

Kymberly Ooten had 17 points and nine rebounds to lead Cal State San Bernardino (8-5, 4-4 CCAA), while Krystal Urzua had 10 points and nine rebounds.

Cal State San Bernardino had a decisive 42-26 rebounding edge and also knocked down 17-of-23 attempts from the free-throw line. Cal State L.A. was only 8-of-14 from the line. The Golden Eagles shot 40 percent from the field, while the Coyotes made 41.5 percent of their shots.

Jamiez Terrell had eight points for Cal State L.A., while Shatori Dearman added six points.

The Golden Eagles fell behind early, 14-6, but rallied strongly and took their first lead, 22-20, after a 3-pointer by Terrell with 4:22 remaining in the half. A 3-pointer by Kelli McClintick gave the Golden Eagles their last lead of the contest, 25-24, with 2:39 to go in the period. Cal State San Bernardino, though, scored the next five points to take a 29-25 halftime lead.

A 3-pointer by Sonia Miller pulled the Golden Eagles to within two points, 30-28, with 19 minutes to play and Cal State L.A. still trailed by only five points, 38-33, after a layup by Johnson with 13:26 remaining. The Coyotes, though, went on a 16-5 run over the next five minutes to take a 54-38 lead and Cal State San Bernardino led by double-digit margins the rest of the way.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday with a road game at Cal Poly Pomona.
