No. 21 Golden Eagles Rally For Hard-Fought 3-3 Tie

Box Score

ARCATA -- Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team had another rally left in it Friday night and it allowed the Golden Eagles to salvage a draw at Humboldt State.

The Golden Eagles struck for three goals in a 20-minute span to erase a 3-0 second-half deficit and earn a 3-3 tie with Humboldt State in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game in Arcata. Cal State L.A. (10-2-2, 7-2-2 CCAA) remains in first place in the CCAA South Division, but they have plenty of company near the top. The Golden Eagles lead with 23 points, but UC San Diego and Cal State Dominguez Hills are two points back and Cal State San Bernardino is just four points behind.

The Golden Eagles held an 18-14 advantage in shots and got two goals from Ann Marie Tangorra in a 84-second span late in regulation to earn the tie.

Cal State L.A. is unbeaten in its last five games, recording a 3-0-2 record over that span. The Golden Eagles have cut it close, though, winning in double overtime against Cal State Stanislaus, getting a goal from Liz Franco in the final minute of regulation for a 1-1 tie at Cal State San Bernardino, rallying from a 2-0 halftime deficit and posting a 3-2 win over Cal Poly Pomona and then the late comeback on Friday in their last four matches.

The Golden Eagles trailed, 2-0, at halftime after Humboldt State (7-5-1, 4-4-1 CCAA) got goals from Kim Carroll in the 23rd minute and Allison Lawrence in the 38th minute. After a Cal State L.A. turnover, Carroll added her second goal of the game to make it 3-0 in the 52nd minute.

Gabbi Segall got the comeback started when she notched her fourth goal of the season with an assist from Alex Conley in the 60th minute. Conley sent in a cross that Segall knocked into the net.

Cal State L.A. kept up the pressure and Tangorra made it count in lightening-quick fashion. Liz Franco had the assist on her first goal, sending in a cross that Tangorra shot into the net after eluding the Humboldt State goalie.

Then, with just 9:31 remaining in regulation, Tangorra came up with a loose ball after a scramble in front of the net and tapped it in for the equalizer.

Neither team scored in the two overtime periods. Tangorra had a bid for a hat trick when she had a header go wide with about five minutes left in the second overtime. Cal State L.A. goalie Jessie Walworth made the last of her three saves with nine seconds left in the second overtime.

Cal State L.A. will return to action on Sunday with another big conference match at Sonoma State.
