WAIPAHU, HI -- Cal State L.A.'s women's tennis team put up a battle, but came up short in the NCAA Division II playoffs in Hawaii.

The Golden Eagles fell behind early and never recovered in a 6-2 loss to Hawaii-Hilo on Thursday at the Central Oahu Regional Park. Cal State L.A. (9-5), ranked 37th in the country and the region's sixth seed, dropped two of the three doubles contests to Hawaii-Hilo (14-12), which is ranked 19th in the country and third in the region. Hawaii-Hilo then won four of the five singles matches that were completed to wrap up the first-round playoff contest.

Cal State L.A. lost in the playoffs to Hawaii-Hilo for the second straight year.

Cal State L.A. did get another win from No. 1 singles player Ioana Comsa, who beat Hawaii-Hilo's Eve Castaing, 6-1, 6-4. The Golden Eagles also picked up a win at No. 3 doubles, where the team of Isis Jackson and Princess Manasseh beat Justine Abella and Stephanie Tadaki, 8-2.

Comsa picked up an impressive victory in her match. In the latest ITA rankings, Castaing was listed at No. 3 in the West Region, while Comsa was ranked 10th. Comsa, who also owns a win over the No. 7 player in the region, Nina Mihova of Hawaii Pacific, in the ITA Fall Regional, should clearly move up after her straight-set win on Thursday.

Krishana DeSilva lost at No. 2 singles to Christie Pagatpatan, 6-2, 6-3; Bojana Ducanovic lost to Nicole Campell, 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3 singles; Linda Majzlikova lost at No. 4 singles to Susan Souksavath, 7-5, 6-3 and Jennifer Avila lost to Carolina Adrila at No. 6 singles, 6-4, 6-0. Jackson's match with Justin Abella at No. 5 singles was not completed since Hawaii-Hilo had clinched the contest before it finished.

The Golden Eagles were making their third NCAA playoff appearance in the past four years.
